Cool, where did you get the plugs from? also I assume that you're going to get a machine shop to do a final pass on the block with a fly cutter.

Plugs came from:

http://www.airlines-pneumatics.co.uk/webca...t.asp?SubCat=27

You have to be careful though. The first lot of 1/4" plugs were steel although advertised as malleable iron.

Yes, once the dry decking is done, I'll get a machine shop to do the bore and final deck skim.

Hows your clearance with the exhaust valves on cylinders 2 & 4?

Not sure yet. looking at it i think we may have to put a bigger chanfer on the top of the bore. will have to see after when i have done the dry build.

If i cant get a good enough CR then i can always whack a turbo on it!!

very nice work.. are you going to be using the SC gasket as you are dry decking?

That sir, is not rust, it is the progressive mass reduction system

Yes, using the SC gasket. I'm basically following the SC guide with the exception that I'm shifting the bore centres to avoid fouling the exhaust valve.

Bit more done today:

Milled the top of the plugs level with the deck:

Now I need to estimate exactly how much to shift the head over.

Wolfie,

They are malleable iron. Link up there ^^^^^^^^^ somewhere

Paul, sorry this might seem a stupid question but whats to stop the plugs unsrewing? i can see some sort of threadlock but wont the heat break that up and let them unseal? with the block being thicker than the plugs how will this effect them heat wise

not trying to be funny i am not an engineer

Wolfie, the plugs are tapered so when you screw them in real tight, they grip real well! back that up with loctite ( I opted for high strength high temp retaining compound) to give a leak free seal. Also the rate of expantion of the metals will be pretty mush the same. I opted for brass plugs where no studs intersect in the theory that brass expansion rate is higher than iron and the will wedge themselves tighter when the engine is warm :)

Paul, it may be ok on the small bores but just so people are aware, moving the head forward and using the Specialist Components gaskets will not work. This is why i have a 0.6mm gasket available to anyone who might want it, at the right price of course *tongue*

Yep, moving the head towards the alternator. Only a couple of millimeters at the most.

I'm guessing that this does not work on the large bores because the gasket would end up overhanging the bore. Am I correct?

i did think about doing this but i was too far into getting the machine work done. Hopefully it will be ok.

SC gasket should be ok on a small bore i reckon.

I have deviated from the SC build guide with the pushrod holes.

On a 1275, it would be OK to press fit a bung, because the bung would be bigger than the hole below.

However, on the small bore, if a bung dropped through, it would be in the gearbox in no time. Hence I've screwed in a plug.

I have a piece of hollow phosphor bronze bar to make some. They will be located with countersunk screws.

will you be doing a lot of welding to the head to get the dry decking to work?

and how will you coolant flow? reverse?

I'm a bit phobic about ruining the heat
treatment by welding the head.

is the pipe in the block brazed ?
