But ig they are exactly horizontal they only hold you back, and aren't as effective at holding you down into the seat. I have always believed -10 to -20 degress below horizontal is optimum.

I have some very old Britax belts somewhere with the original instructions. Proves how thoughts have changed - they tell you to bolt the ends to floor behind the seat, as close to the seat as possible!!

Warwick.

surly the compressiong bit would depend where the harness holes in the seat are in relation to the top of your shoulder, if your a short arse the strain is going to be taken by the seats beforeyour shoulder
if its above, the harnesses are going to take up the straightest line untill it hits somthing statit, like the seats so as your travling forward on impact when they have reaced the point where its straight somthing else is going to have to give way, obviously shoulders which will cause a jerk which as you say could damage your back
if andys got excess cage material i would recomend fitting it but can wrap your harnessed actualy round the bar rather than mounting to a fixed point on the bench

The reason for the 45degree rule is because the seat's back would collaps, taking your back with it.

Not going off on a tangant..but where do they bolt the harness on a single seater? i.e F1, formula 3000 etc?

i have just been working on this tonight, i mounted the bar so it is about 20cm below the harness holes.

feels and looks right.

i think single seaters have the short harnesses and mounted directly behind the seat.

Mine, and just about every other single seater i can think of, has the short shoulder harnesses mounted immediately behind the seat at about shoulder height.

I had a mate who mounted his harnesses on the floor right behind the seats. But he also made his own harnessess from cutting up old seat belts and stiching them together with fishing line! He also said his brother rebored blocks using carefully sized PVC pipe wrapped in wet and dry! Irelevant to this topic but I just had to share that with you all! Needless to say his car got impounded for being unroadworthy.

ive been a bit lazy with the updates on this as i had to sort my new car out and i have been ill.

BIG THANKS goes out to milamber for the welding in the cage.

he came round a couple of weeks ago and set to it, he spent the whole day welding with only tea and food brakes to stop!

hes like the welding stig!

after he had gone i spent a bit of quality time with a jigsaw and my roof skin! its surprising how much the steel skin ways!

(i need a fish eye lense and that shot would be awsome)

and ive also got my new dash which i picked up from curley HQ along with my parcel shelf, its wrapped up in tape to protect the lovely carboness of it all!

and a quick shot of my bros N/A 1380 that im building up for him, ive got to skim the block quite a bit!

im hoping to get a bit more done on the car now christmas is out the way and i can focus on it but im still feeling a bit weak from the killer man flu!

oooh! that does look smart.

the man flu seems rife at the mo, i've been coughing my ring up today and shivering and sweating at the same time...

What are you doing steering rack wise? what ever you do get check the passenger side for wear/play in the bush (even if it is new!)

also i'd be tempted to add some bracing to the rack mounting area after seeing the movement in my floor.

yeah thats cool jason i should be about, just give me a shout if your gonna come over.

thanks for asking about the job rick, it sorted itself out in the end we seemed to get loads of work in and out the door before christmas.

lemsip is the only way to go joe!

steering rack im going to go for a titan motorsport jobbie, altough i think you said there on hold at the mo? ive just got the standard one in atm for mocking up with!

i will look into bracing the floor around them, im not sure how i will go about that? i will just add some fillets around it i guess.

Ha, given up on the lemsip and started on the beer now...

Yep, the Titan one are on hold apparently due to the std rack casings being inconsistent.

also the rack bushings that wear are NLA, plus the shagged rack i have with the welded on track rods has the bush missing anyway.....

I'm going to knock a couple up from some Acetal when i'm back at work, also i'll tack in some angle to stop the massive floor flex *angry*

For reinforcing the rack area i think the best solution is to try to tie the rack mount into the subframe as this is what it needs to stay still in reference to.

I think double plating from the lower rear mounts all the way up to the bulkhead/turbo box, with the subframe bolted to the body just below the bulkhead box and the plating stitched to the rack mount would suffice.

there was a thread with a pic pic of a subframe bolted to the body as above but a can't find it...

anyway something like this...

although whle searching i found this pic of jimsters car where the steering rack seems to me nicely tied into the cage.
