oh thats a a right bag "o" spanners is'nt it, is that scoring on the layshaft, the case on its own will need a blumming good clean up if its not damaged!

are those marks in the oil pickup pipe frm bits flying about when it went pop!

i feel your pain on this one robert!

when it comes to mini gearbox's a bit of over-engineering could be used, but as they also say, bring it back harder, better, faster&stronger robert!

SKYLINES ARE LIKE CLITS, EVERY FLANGE SEEMS TO HAVE ONE: see this sticker on my silvia

the Search-section on this forum is blummin superb & simple to use, unlike some other forums, without the search-section & the help of this bunch of chaps on here i'll never be able to !!!Start the day with a 998cc turbo!!! :) i'm getting closer though!

Yep thats buggered!

I'm sure this is akin to teaching granny to suck eggs Robert, but if I were you I'd pull the engine gallery plugs and give it all a good clean out just in case some bits of that lot got where they shouldn't have.....

Im impressed how quickly you've stripped it down...if it were me I would of spent at least a few weeks tyre kicking before getting the motivation to strip down! :)

Oh dear.

I wonder what has actually broken? Obviously all the teeth didn't fall off at the same time. Maybe the layshaft has snapped, or a bearing gone???

nope wil all the shafts and bearing seem in very good condition ,no scoring or wear showing .quite amazing really.

OOO you've done well mate!!!

Do you think it could something to do with when you changed your diff? I would of though alot more strain would be put on the 'box running a 2.9 diff, could of tipped it over the edge?? *oh well*

Hope you get it sorted..especially with MITP just around the corner!!

Ive got a standard 'box here if you need any spare bits?

thanks matty , i may take you up on that ill see what i have in the shed , i do agree that the 3rd gear with a 2.95 diff seems to have a much greater exposure to loads of torque as it pulls in that gear for a whilev , i may use this as a chance to go back to a 3.1 ,and run bigger wheels on the rd .

but more picturnosity..
shafts look ok , gear wheels need a bit of work ,thought i might weld the teeth back on ?
im guessing from the state of the umpteen other teeth in the case that 1st motion gear spat a tooth ,that fell in the gears and started stripping them and this locked against the wheels and stripped 3rd gear ,maybe perhaps .

im happy to confirm that a stock turbo helical box will break if it has 150 lbs ft put through it.

Hi,
I'd be fairly sure that its use at Avon would be the underlying cause....

Sorry to hear that mate, thanks for showing use the great pictures of the massive damage.

I'm surprised it lasted you this long mate after seeing how good your car was at Avon!

I hope you sort it soon.

Minimadj, You have obviously not heard of molecular welding. Briefly it's a system for joining broken parts where the break is totally clean. The parts are clamped together tightly and an ultra high frequency is passed through the parts. At the interface of the break extreme heat is generated which restores the molecular structure to around 98% integrity. It's a system developed by NASA for use in future space stations but is now finding it's way onto Nuclear subs and ocean going tankers where new parts are hard to find.
I don't know how Robert has access to this technology as it's just one step below Top secret.
Perhaps he would care to tell us.

Dave

It used to!! Things have moved on a long way from HF welders on plastics. In fact I had one it cost a fortune and never worked consistently.
Looking forward to seeing Roberts box repaired.

incidentaly if anyone has this happen to them ,and your not sure what it sounds like ,.. imagine ..take a tin chocky biscuit box ,put in 6, 6 inch nails ,and 2, steel boul balls like they use in france , then put the lid back on ,then,, get a friend to climb up a 3 story building and throw it off the top ...
the sound it makes when it hits the ground is what your listening for .
