So here's a pic of the mini getting it's suspension sorted...

Went out for a drive Sunday. Absolutely flying along. Finally getting some miles on her! Then this....

I no I shouldn't of but I upped the boost a bit. To be fair it was running the same boost all weekend. Including the trip to mini spares pottersbar on Saturday. And the AFR gauge was reading fine.
What I didn't do, which I do usually do is re torque the head down after its been run up to temperature. Lesson learned there!
I'm going to drill and tap for the extra two studs whilst it's off as it looks like that's where it's gone. Going to have a go at doing it in situ. I have access to a mag drill.

Anyway was good fun whilst it was going.
And so glad it's dry decked!!

Well got head off.

So today I managed to drill the head for the two extra studs with great success!! :)
Was going go drill the block with a mag drill I've borrowed from a mate, but he's seemed to of lost the chuck adapter for it. So I've had to order one. Hopefully next weekend I can do the block end!

Is it a common area for it to go there?

Hi,
Don't want to piss on anyone's bonfire but is that damage to the piston top (outer edge of no 4, clutch end).
I had similar happen a few fears ago and manage to crack the ring lands.

I'll have a closer look at it. There is there a way to check it without stripping it?

I guess a compression test once it's back together will tell?

A compression test may prove nothing.
When mine went the symptom was smoke out of the exhaust when re applying throttle after "over un" / throttle closed.
Myself and d4ve wasted hours swapping things out and him following me up the local bypas trying to eliminate the cause. In the end I bit the bullet and heeded everyone on here's advise and tore the block down.
I appreciate pulling the engine and checking is a PITA but no worse than putting the head back on and finding you still have issues.
If you search some of my historic disaster threads hopefully this should be enough of case for you to aire on the cautious side and check.

Shame there's no pics.
I didn't think the piston looked that badly damaged. But I'm not highly experienced I guess.

So if I put it all back together and it smokes on the over run, I've probably damaged the piston ring land?
The bore looks fine. I'll turn the engine over next time I'm down there and have a proper look.

There is usually no smoke without fire.
Having four failed engines behind me and MANY lessons learned I'd urge you to tear it down to check even if only as a damage limitation excesisise.
It could save you a lot of time and more importantly ££££

My sister is so fit I won't show anyone her picture

Are there any signs of det around the edges of the pistons at all ? Even any very tiny marks ? Get a really good torch and look very closely. Turning the engine over until the offending cylinder is at TDC will help.

Phil.

There is definitely a small mark on piston number 4
Right on the edge. I can't see any othe marks.. next time im at the workshop I'll get pics up with the piston at tdc and a torch on it.
I assumed it was a mark from where the piston clipped a bit of gasket or something.

I only speak from experience I have a piston in the shed that looks fine on top, apart from some small pin size holes, but all the ring lands are gone. It cost me a hole world of hurt. Like said about worth looking deeper if you can.

It's all part of the fun when you play with your knob in the car, it's only going to end bad.... as I found out so many times.
