I can vouch for chain reaction cycles as above, but winstanleys pissed my mate about with a set of cranks so much i refuse to use them again. Basically he never got the bolts for them and ended up buying some.
But i just bought a pair of royal signature gloves, very comfy thin gloves, and a pair of 24" khe tyres, loved them on my bmx, so bought some for the identiti. Saved so much weight over the dmr tyres i had on as i don't really ride dirt. Hopefully I'll use the bike more now the mini is off the road *happy*

I bought my new bike from Rutland Cycles at Whitwell and I can't recommend them highly enough.

I went with a vague idea of what I wanted, walked in the door and was confonted by a guy my age (mid-50s), similar height but obviously a real cyclist. He talked me though all the technicalities, frame size, geometry, materials, tyre size, use etc. I then sat on a few bikes to get the sizing sorted out. Not wishing to appear ageist, but he knoew what he was on about and he understood my needs. Very important when making a large investment decision ( I paid more for the bike than all but one of our Minis :( )

I came away with the right bike. If I had bought on-line I would have bought the wrong size and the wrong geometry for what I need.

Classic :)

Has no-one made a pushbike with shaft drive (like the classic BMW motorbikes) ???

Only a few bevel gears required.

My latest project (Birthday/ Christmas gift to myself).

An original 1983 MK1 Raleigh Burner frame and forks
NOS Acorn Freestyle mag wheels with coaster hub on the rear
Original Tioga Comp III 2.125 tyres
NOS Raleigh grips, seat post and seat clamp (seatpost and clamp were a right bastard as they are an oddball size!)
NOS funky saddle (for a laugh)
NOS Odyssey 180mm one piece crank
NOS Sugino 40 tooth chainwheel and spider
NOS Diacomp brake lever and MX 1000 front caliper (forgot how shit they really were)
NOS Odyssey Tripple Trap pedals (will certainly make a meal of your shins!)
NOS generic Cro-Mo handlebars
NOS Bulldog stem
NOS Odyssey sealed headset

Can't wait to get out and use it and burn off some of this lard *happy*

Anyone buying their loved one a bike for Xmas?

I'm looking for a Mountain Bike for the wife. I say Mountain Bike, it just needs to be able to do roughish farm tracks at worst. No downhill or really rough stuff. She already has a road bike.

There area a number of Women specific bikes avaliable. i've been looking at a Specialized Myka:

http://www.specialized.com/gb/gb/bc/SBCPro...scname=Mountain

Anyone had any good or bad experiences with that or any other?

I bought the missus a bike for christmas. I was given strict guidelines on what she did not want. She didn't want a huge cumbersome Mountain bike with 1000 gears, and she didn't want a step through frame either. Limited choice then*oh well*

With the guidlines so strict, I bought her a modern BMX, fitted a longer seat tube (Modern BMX's have REALY short seat tubes), fitted a Womans specific big ass saddle *hehe!*, fitted larger handle bars and some clip on mug gaurds. It actually looks surprisingly good, and has everything she needs in a bicycle, except maybe a basket *hehe!*

The theory was that it's a small bike, easier to handle, has only one gear, so not complicated, and it was pink *hehe!* She has already see it and loves it, fit is perfect, and I got the thumbs up for fitting the fat ass saddle*happy*

Other than that, I'm unaware of those bikes you mention, edit* Specialized have been around for a good number of years, and should produce a good quality bike, whatever spec level it is. Its a well known brand

Paul the specialised myka are decent bikes, there's a girl at work who uses one for some slight cross country, although I'm not big on the suntour forks, they will do the job just fine, and they have lock out for when you don't need much travel, on a road for example.

My wife has been riding my old steel Saracen since I bought my Orange in 2002. They both lived in the Motorhome garage and only came out on holidays.

We are now trying to get out on the bikes 2 or 3 times a week, depending on the weather, trying seriously to get me fitter and loose some weight. With the terrain around here we need some gears, about 5 would do me although I have 27!

EDIT: Specialized also make the McLaren Venge that help bring the Road Racing World Championship back to GB after 46 years, plus this years TdF Green Jersey courtesy of Le Cav..

I bought the missus a Carrera from halfrauds. Managed to get it on one of the discount days and paid less than £200 for it.

I am very pleased with it for the cash, and she loves it. Disks, suntour fork and very comfortable I'm told.
