Well,

Whilst the rest of you were at MIPT enjoying yourselves today, I carried on cutting grinding and "welding"....

Because it was fairly windy today, I restricted my self to the high current welds but, even so, my shield gas was bing blown away..... can't work in the garage, no room...

Strengthening plates on the front subframe...

Welds will need to be ground back and re-done in the garage with shield gas not being blown away, once the subframe is off, but you should get the idea, a well worthwhile addition IMHO...

Looks like a good mod, also another place to drill holes...

Brace bar, my own design based on what they used to be like

A bit more bending/welding required but getting there...

That looks good, but I have to admit my first thought was what is he doing with the wheel barrow handle....

It's actually 1 1/2" cold drawn seamless tube, in this case an old roll cage cut up to practice with, but I have more (new) tube in the garage.

It is one hell of a lot stronger than the small square tube that most "specialists" supply as brace bars.

Also, because it is in one piece and tubular and runs across the front from one side to the other, the torsional rigidity will be way above any 2X single bar designs.

I take no credit for it though.... many years ago when I first had a Mini with a GF/GRP front, this was the only design the MOT tersters would accept - I'm copying it from memory :)

Will the front still go over it??

Yes, the two bits of wood are temporary supports for the front while I measured it all up - here is the inside

The triangular bit of wood is where the tube runs.

In this configuration it will be ideal for a "half loop" hinge to run around the tube for a conventional front hinge arrangement, ie, front opens towards the road, but the half loop hinges will allow it to lift of completely quite easily.
I'll do that first as I have a deadline to meet, but ultimately, it will be cantilever hinged from the back so it goes up and backwards like a normal bonnet.

I always fancied doing a flip front that hinged at the bulk head. Have a look at A4 boot hinges, very compact but lift the lid (or front in this case) up and then away a touch before hinging to just beyond verticle. All held with gas struts.

Thanks Andy. I'll look at the A4 boot ones.

At the moment my best inspiration is a cupboard door in the utility room (old bits from the kitchen when I replaced it) which lifts up and backwards (it's a very high door) and the mechanism is so simple.... two link arms, one spring.

Somebody on here did a conversion of this description using Audi 80 boot hinges.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Yes, I've seen it on here - that's where I first got the idea and why I decided I want the same.

It will be so much better having the whole front go backwards and upwards.

With my timescales I won't do it initially, but I will do it....

There aren't too many scrappies in rural Suffolk so I'll look at the models people suggest when I'm in one but my local one (30 miles away) usually only has about 100 cars so doesn't really cover all the models available....

On the other hannd, the utility room cupboard door is very local.....

I also run a weld down the inside of the tie bar mount. just to finish off the seam from the factory. If that’s makes sense...?

Si

I drill holes in everything..!

Yep. makes perfect sense and I will do the same - it's criminal there is only a small weld at the top of the inside join. There are a few other welds I will be "enhancing", I just did the photo with the most obvious strengthening (in my opinion) shown.

A long, long time ago, I actually had one of the front tie bar bracket welds fail - and it was only on an 850... The only thing that saved me was the bolt that attaches the subframe to the front panel also goes through the tie rod bracket so when the welds failed, the bolt held it all together.

No rush, but yes please....

In the meantime. a kitchen cupboard...

Everything has had it's photo rotated 90 degrees to see how it would work on a flip front

So simple....

Your idea seems to be very similar to this: http://www.superfastminis.com/FLIPFRONTENDKIT.htm.

Your're right Jean, that is ultimately how I want it to open.

In the short term I will take the easy solution of hinging forwards, but the up and back is so much better...

can the original bonnet hinges be used in their original position on a flip 'back' front

I did consider this, but they only allow the bonnet to reach 45 degrees before the hinges foul on the windscreen lower panel.

It would be possible to fabricate new ones with a deeper "U" but then they would start to foul on the bulkhead in the closed position and at maximum modification limit they would still be a long way off allowing 90 degrees openning.

Would standard hinges cope with all teh extra weight??

Probably not in standard form, but they could be strengthened - however it's the limited angle they go back to that is the problem really - a complete front that only lifts 45 degrees would be worse than one hinging forward IMO.

This where I had seen them before the chap with the Van.

http://www.g2.nu/chris/mini/

He's using audi 80 boot hinges. My car has essentially the same hinges. Rod, pm me an email address and I'll mail you some pic's.

Andy,

PM'd - thanks

Now, how about this for a novel idea....

Double glazed hanging window hinges, but rotated 90 degrees..

But paired up so two hignes make one

And the way they work

Only 85 degrees but a possibility ???
