No real pics to update tonight, but I still have been working on something that's been head f@@king me for days but I think I have it sorted now, so I will show some pics in good time, of my developments and how it pans out. I think I will have to get the Cadburys Fingers CAD out tomorrow

Ok this has been something thats been bugging me for a long time about the Mk1, and looks like it was worse then I thought, so this is what I have

as you can see the shocks go in at the bottom.

the spring / alloy flange was rubbing in two places.

This dont look good,

the arm looks like it has came in to contact with the subby

so this is the plan that i have came up with to get around this...

looks like a better angle

absolutely fantastic idea imo, bin the top coilover mount and create space in that area all in one go,
the lean of the coilover should help the spring and damper rates to remain more constant along its stroke too imo

ps ..i dont think the mole grips will hold when you hit a pot hole *happy*

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

Definitely the right way to go with coilovers

I couldn't do it with mine due to the frame on the drivers side

You can tie the mounts into the tower bolts area as well

Thanks mate, yes its the plan to replace that part of the bulkhead, as I have had to move the outside stud inwards

I cant move it out as that then would push the wheels out. and then i would need arches

As the offset of the wheels i have, then they would hit the shocks.

Our cars are completely different but suffered from this same problem due to both of us using high positive offset wheels and wanting to use coilovers, so not being able to move the lower mount 'out'.

Are you just going to cut a pocket / window into the side of the cross member, like below:

I've seen it done this way a few times, it has the advantages that it is the least amount of work and with a fixed front probably not too much to see, especially if you strategically place a fabricated catch tank one side and something else on the other to hide this area.

I remember a Hillclimb Mini from the early 80's I saw which had narrowed the whole of this area (to disguise the fact that the top mount had moved in) and at first glance you couldn't tell but it is much more work and may not work as you have full inner flitch panels which would somehow have to be integrated.

Cheers

Looking at that pic it looks like they have used rear shocks as I can not see a bolt. Also looking at the angle.

Carnforth, Lancs

I've done similar with standard shocks but it's then much simpler as you don't need the same strength.
Looks a neat solution. As you say, if you could use rears (with the right performance) it would be even simpler

Been getting very close to doing the same with mine too. I've moved the bottom mount out as far as possible but it's still too vertical for my liking.

At the min what you see is just whats been in my head, its still not the end result so there is nothing to say it will work, I this could be a big can of worms that I may regent lots!! as I think i need a little bit more R&D to make sure its going to work a 100%

I was looking at doing a similar thing, its the reason I havent stuck my front end on yet. I decided it was a horrible idea

I seriously doubt it!

Last night I had a full on night in London on the piss so what better way to sweat the beer out? get busy on the car!! By the time i got the train home it was lunch time, it was a little bit latter then I had planned but I had some extra hands to help on the MK1 which was a big help (Thanks Ben) as of tonight I am happy to say that 99.99% of the paint has been stripped off that needs to come off also its got 2 coats of primer to keep the rust down.

I hope to get a full day done tomorrow also.
Thanks for looking *smiley*
