Exhaust no.3

I fitted new med 1.3 roller tip rockers. When I fitted it I slackened all the adjusters.

It is a bit strange as it ran fine!

hmm strange,

worth pulling the springs off 2&3 exh and doing a wiggle check me thinks... although if it was tight enough to bend a push rod then it should have been tight enough to hold open and twat the piston and bend the valve...

All the exhaust valves are out and bagged up. I'll check them all.

What am I looking for regarding coil bind?

I bent a pushrod or 2 in mine but was under the impression this was due to the poor quality of pushrods that are on the market.

To check for coil bind you'll need to reassemble the engine and turn it over by hand, look at the gaps between the valve springs at full lift. You need about 0.040" minimum.
Fitting the 1.3 rockers may have caused this.

Ok I'll check that once I've fitted the valve stem seals and report back.

Thanks for the comments

Right them lads
It's been a slow winter re build this year as I've bought a house and been working on that aswel!

Anyway. Engine is almost ready to go back in after hopefully fixing all oil leaks and fitting a double grey diaphragm as the single grey just couldn't cope with 8psi or above.

The other main thing I've changed is I'm doing away with the mechanical water pump so I can use the electric pump to do away with heat soak which I was suffering with last summer.

I'm fitting the pump into the dry deck hose at number 4 end of the engine. I'm planning on feeding my extra rad from the heater outlet at number 4.
As the pump is at the other end of the engine would it be ok for me to return the extra rad back to the thermostat sandwich plate? Or would it have to go to the bottom hose, bypassing the main rad?

Thanks
Josh

Single grey slipping on 8psi ? Was the clutch/flywheel free of oil contamination and was the diaphragm on the pressure plate completely flat when the clutch was assembled ?

To be fair the diaphragm wasn't new. It came with the kad flywheel I bought years ago so probably wasnt a fair test. It wasnt completely flat. Need 1.5mm off the lugs. But thought I'd try a double grey as I want to run high boost

It could have lost a lot of it's spring tension if it's well used I guess. That could have been your issue I guess.

Hopefully I've solved the problem with the double grey diaphragm! :)

Now do you think it would be ok to return the secondary rad back to the thermostat sandwich plate? I'm not going to run a thermostat, as I've read that electric water pumps don't like any restrictions in the system.

Well I've got it all up and running again.
New valve stem seals fitted have solved the idle smoking issue. :)

Clutch is coping with 10psi now, but it's slipping at 10psi! That's with the new double grey diaphragm fitted. I didn't get the backplate lugs machined as was advised not to due to putting too much pressure on the trust bearings. :/ next time it's apart do I machine them? Or do I just get rid of it and go for a rts clutch set up?

I've also got rid of the mechanical water pump and fan.
It seems to be working OK but I've got to replumb in the extra rad as it's cold to touch after its all up to temperature.

I'm also not getting 2nd gear which I think is due to
The KAD internal gear linkage. I need to adjust it a bit.

Once I've sorted these bits and bobs, I'll book it in for suspension set up and rolling road. Hopefully in a few weeks time. Although I don't want to pull the engine out again to do the clutch, think I might just keep the boost down to 10/12psi so I can try and enjoy a summer of driving it!

Yep the clutches are sensitive to not being machined right. Personally I would go rts

Cheers Joe I'll start collectin the bits.
Is it OK to go lightweight very? Or does it need to be standard?

OK so I got the RTS flywheel all built and it's all in and working.
Took it out for a blast in the rain to test and all seems good.
Only problem is it jumps out of 2nd gear. But I think that is to do with the internal gear linkage. So I need to have a play with that.

Got the gear linkage sorted!
Getting suspension set up on Saturday.
How do these figures look....
FRONT
Caster 4 degrees
Toe 1.5mm out
-1.5 degrees
REAR
Toe 0.5mm in
Camber -0.5 degrees

Do these look OK? I'm on force racing 10x7s and it's all rose jointed with solid subby mounts. Along with a Quaife ATB diff.

It's a weekend/track day mini.

Thanks

I can't see anything wrong with that. Is there an advantage to having slight toe out as opposed to the front parallel?

I'm setting it up to corner well hopefully. The guy also does the corner weights.
If I was to set the front with less toe out, would it not turn in as well?

Suspension all done. What a completely different car!
It does on a straight line when on full throttle and off throttle. Very pleased with it.
Just running 10psi for now. Going get some miles on it then rolling road.
It weighs in at 675kg with full tank of petrol. So there's a few bits to do to get the weight down. It's all fairly standard in that aspect.
