There's a knack to it, that's for sure.

First thing to do is relax, otherwise you try too hard.

Just to finish this thread off, here's a picture of the installed manifold:

As you can see, I've double the length of the runners. The simulation suggests that this length will give the greatest area under the torque curve rather than the headline hp figure.

Paul,

that looks very neat.

I have one question regarding the inlet for the idle valve. This was discuss on the MPI idle valve thread http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=450006

The photo above shows your inlet to the idle valve is open to atmospere, rather than taken from the induction pipework pre TB.
Before I finalise my install, I'm just wondering why? Presumably during warm up, when the valve is open you are going to "leak" any boost to atmosphere?

Just a sanity check...

thanks

Graham

There shouldnt be any boost at idle i would have thought, taking it pre tb is to ensure its filtered air thats bled in. It could come from anywhere in theory
The idle valve is a controled bypass for the tb soo thats where i would naturaly put it too lol

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

Whilst there is no boost at idle, it would - in theory - depend how you set the software.

If you set it to follow a warmup temperature curve, it is partially open until the set temperature is reached so could leak a small amount of boost if boost is generated before the engine is warmed up. The amount would be negligible though, as the IACV ports are usually small.

If you set the software for closed loop control it is also driven by engine speed, ie, it closes as soon as the throttle is openned, even if the engine isn't fully warm (and re-opens if required when the throttle is closed) so it can only ever draw in air.

If the inlet is connected direct to the induction pipework upstream of the throttle body (or is already built into the throttle body), there is no additional filter and the software settings are irrelevant.

(when I say software, I can only speak for MS2, MS3 may handle it better)

Looks stunning paul. I think it would be rude not to RR it before Christmas!

Although I understand your point about the idle valve being open to atmosphere which could lose boost, I would never ever boost a cold engine.

The other point is that the idle valve closes pretty quick. I think it is closed by around 50 Deg C coolant temp.

No RR for this for a while. Going to try to get it setup for MiTP next year, then break it up :(

I can't justify having £15k tied up in a car that we may use a couple of times a year. Once the injection and manifold science is proven or not then it is job done.

That set-up looks smashing, results should be interesting.

Shame to let it go at some point but I understand your 15k point.
Should be worth another mag feature before you break it up...!?

Dazed and Confused....

What not just use it more? you and your lads could go hillclimbing, although you'd have to run in Sports libra.

If we do decide to break it up, the engine and all the important bits would go into a road Mini so that we can actually enjoy it.

Let's see how the next 12 months pan out.
