Do not bump start - these engines have been known to jump teeth on cambelt if you employ this method!!!

More than likely low battery voltage is your problem - you need at least 12.3v

There was no problem with the battery at all.

Bump starting was the last resort.

The only time you need to bump start an engine is if the battery is flat, it is tight so will not crank fast enough or it has a mechanical issue (low compressions).

Repeat never bump start a KAD twin cam - the same may well be true for the BMW twin also.

So what about bump starting other Twin cam over head belt driven engines?

4 wheels drives and auto's may be but WTF can't you bump start a 16v head a series?????

The answer probably lies on the bottom (crankshaft) sprocket, and how far the belt wraps around it.

Belts jump (or strip) teeth on the bottom sprocket because it's half the diameter, drives both camshafts and has few teeth.

A mass produced design will attempt to wrap the belt as far around the bottom sprocket as possible ensuring the load is spread over as many teeth on the belt as possible.

I expect the KAD design has very few teeth in engagement due to the constraints of the belt run.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

It would help if KAD used the 19 and 38 tooth sprockets, but they don't

Right, been to the rolling road today at peter burgess,

However, the car made fucking shit power. Not at all pleased and i need to get something done about it. This could be down to the Rolling road

I have every confidence it's the rolling road. I am assured that it has 149bhp if not more. KAD have offered to take the engine back out to prove the car has that power.
Maybe Peter burgess wasn't the best place to take it.

Going to Northampton Motorsport get another session in.

Seemed to run fine, ill put the graph up later.

It only made 107bhp at the wheels.

You told me it seemed quicker than before so I would guess there is no problem aslong as its set up correctly, but 107 does sound low

I seriously doubt it!

107 does seem low for a engine of that spec, didnt someone say in your other thread about his rollers being out by a percentage?

Was the KAD power at the crank as it was setup on an engine dyno?

Are you sure the cambelt didnt jump a tooth when you bump started it?

I seriously doubt it!

Right, the KAD power was at the flywheel. Even adding back on the losses which were around 15bhp id still be not close to the 149bhp.

The Bump starting - we thought that too, where this bump starting a KAD 16v engine is bad has come from i dont know but we mentioned this to Dave who built the engine and he also says its an old wives tale. If the cams were to jump it would have to be backwards anyway. If it jumps forward then the valves will clash, and we would know about that. The cam timing hasnt changed, but im going to check anyway.

Robert, we gained about 5bhp, ill upload the graph in a bit.

At the moment KAD say its the rolling road, they built the engine there the experts so we trust what they say? Its just a case of the expertise vs RR at the moment.

I shall get another rolling road down at Northampton motorsport and see if it confirms what we have found today. If were close to the 149bhp or more at Northampton we shall see where the problem lies.

Agreed?

matt ,was that rr run with the bonnet on ?
i had a cortina rally on my rr once , it lost 25 bhp with the bonnet on compared to off .
also , did kad test it with the short bellmouths ?

Only thing I could think for such a change in HP on this is the valve timing on the pulleys has changed somehow. Has the belt been off for any reason? Mine is a L1/BD3 combo too and 150 bhp is a pretty much the standard output for this combo on a small valve head.

Matt I know when matt argent went and put his turbo on the rollers he was left alone with it and he adjusted it or something to read what he thought was more correct. I would ask matt what he thinks

As above though, don't get too down on the numbers, it all depends on so many variables, but if your mates ask down the boozer tell them it made 162bhp *wink*
