Quick update,

Had the day off work and wife's on holiday so I managed a few hours in the garage.

Plan is to get the car strip to a bare shell ready for its new weld in roll cage. I've booked in for a Historic cage, but tied into the A & B Pillers. Will also link into the rear turrets.

So today I've been removing some more weight

Cut out the roof lining bars support.

Yep alloy rear shelf is on the cards.

I'm trying to aviod drilling holes everywhere. I don't want it to look obviously that its been extensively lightened, otherwise I'd drill the cross member etc.

I managed to strip the front subframe this afternoon and double check some predicted weighs. I'm now at estimated 504kg and pretty confident another 5kg can be found.

Some lovely parts and work there, first time me seeing this thread.

Whilst maybe extreme...

The alloy top arm, has square edges etc. Radiusing these would remove a little material and safe a few grams ?
gun drilling the centre of the big bolt ?

The cast steering arm...

I was extremely bored a couple of years ago when re-doing my Granada front suspension, so took to the "upright" with a flap wheel in the grinder. Only a few minutes work and over 200g removed from each.
I was mainly cleaning up to paint, but decided to weigh before/after too.

Fuel pump looks like an 044 ? I'm sure some lesser pumps would be capable and lighter ?

Not to pollute either, but Ralph went to extremes on his RV8 metro project to reduce weight whilst retaining a good standard appearance, it's worth a read if you havent seen it already.

Ok today I drop my shell off at Owens Fabrication. The idea was to save weight with the T45 weld in cage, however to stiffen the car to improve handling, more T45 bars have been added. So guess what, it's going to weigh more than before. Endaf's advice should mean the increase stiffness will outway any weigh saving in the corners. Not sure how much extra, but possibly another 10kg including miglia bulkhead and extra strength for inner wing supports. Cage will be tied into both the rear turrets and alloy beam aswel as front subframe mounts.

After a chat, I've also concluded the Kirkey seat was possibly the wrong choice. Especially as its now way to big for me. So maybe another 2-3kg to add back on for a carbon / grp racing seat.

So where back to 518kg, I guess sub 500kg is now out if the question. I long as I can personnelly get to 80kg, it will still be sub 600kg including me. Just another 14kg worth of dieting left.

You've gone through all this trouble saving weight / crash the 500kg barrier, only to settle for a cage weighing 10kg more and crush your dream because someone tells you so?

Isn't the title of your thread drag strip weight loss? Why wouldn't a like for like cage in T45 be more han sufficient? Why would you need miglia shell stiffness on the straights? (or without running huge slicks on the corners for hat matter)

Again stick to your plan as you're doing a superb job. The personal weight loss is just icing on yhe cake...

Ive just fitted the T45 cage and should still be around the 400kg mark. Keep going theres no end of weight in all the little bits to come off

I seriously doubt it!

The car is more aimed at trackdays rather than the drag strip anyway. The engine and gearing would comprise it for all out strip car. Don't forgot this will still be full road car aswell. Am happy with the way things are going and confident with Endaf advice. Yes it's a small setback in weight but I'm sure 18kg can be found in the long run. I'm looking to extract the best out of the car and to be fair weight is only one of many important factors.

Like Paul says, there plenty more bits that I've not even considered yet. As I rebuild the car, every part will be looked at. I haven't even thought about removing weight from the block, gearbox yet. Plus MadMk1's build thread is a good insight into how all the small bits add up.

Do you know how much the cage weighed? What have you installed the basic kit or the kit with optional bars. The weighed quoted is 27kg, but I'm not sure what that includes. My safety devices cages weighed 34kg inc harness bar and CDS dash bar for the steering coloulm mount.
