I've got a nice big bag of yellow poly bits so they can go on while the subby is of.

Had a look at the rear subframe while I was there. I built it up about 2 years ago with pretty much new everything. It's done about 30 miles being towed and all the rubber bits are perished and split.

Same with all the "new" rubber bits on mine, all perished - and mine's done less than 1 mile, just being pushed in and out of the garage over the last two years - even the CV boots are cracked ...

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

I assume my replacement CV boots from last year have cracked as well, as my mini gets daily use in all weather.

No wonder the front passenger side wheel bearing is sounding decidedly ropey. Will have to shell out for the hard wearing boots at 17 quid a pop.

It really is a poor effort with all this new rubber stuff breaking down with little or no use!

Sorry for the little rant on your build thread Andy, but it looked like an ideal time to mention it. *wink*

I know what you mean, every mini I've mot preped in the last couple of years has needed some form of rubber component replacing and none of it was particularly old. I need to ring minispares tomorrow, so I might have a moan and try and get some discount...

EDIT: I tell a lie, it was December 2007. It's still not good enough

I had my 3 year old pot joint boots split on me. In the end I managed to buy some genuine rover ones. Expensive, but as the first ones managed 18 years I'm hoping these will too.

My next door neighbour works for a company that makes CV and steering rack boots/gaiters. He's showed me a sample of them and they're much better than the shit you get nowadays. They do several sizes of universal boots which between them will suit all cars - they have boots which will stretch to 8 times their standard diameter and can be fitted without removing the joint from the shaft.

I'll try to get some prices from him - might be useful going forward if we're to expect the kind of quality thats about at the moment.

Well I take back what I said before. I've inspected the boots properly on both sides now and they appear to be still like new!

So maybe they require use to stop them perishing?

Possibly. I dropped the subframe of the other night and found all the rubber bushes where shot. They can stay for now, but when it's a bit nearer to road legal it will get poly bushs fitted.

Not sure about skill, I'm busy redoing a load of things I didn't do right first time round... Mine won't be done any time soon. I have to earn the money to do it as and when over time/bonus permits (and wifey doesn't make me spend it on the house etc). I'd rather take my time and make it the car I want it to be *smiley*

During the week I got a bit more done on the rear arch and boot floor.

I decided to change the front of arch closing panel while I was at it, so added to my mini spares order first thing Tuesday morning. Unfortunately they didn't bother to dispatch it until Friday, so I had to find something else to do today.

So I chopped of the driver's side A panel to get a repair I had done poorly in the past, and guess what I found...

So I sorted that out and tidied up the repair on the A post.

I had hoped to get the original repair done, patch up the bottom of the inner wing where it meets the floor and fit the A panel again, but my virtually brand new grinder's motor burnt out. Typically, Wifey has thrown the receipt away. In B&Poo's favour they took my bank statement and searched on their computer until they found my receipt, then arranged for the grinder to be repaired. That's going to take 2 weeks, so I've had to buy the cheapest grinder they had. Safe to say I now have vibration white finger/arm/elbow...

That just left me time for one final patch.

From here:

If you get some, you will spend hours day dreaming of what parts you can make nice holes in. Ask Rob H! *wink*
