I see, no there is one front and back, it's like a skid guard thing. Cutting it off could be a right can of worms lol.

its to take away the load on the weld where the tube goes in to the mufler. without it it would rip out. nice drill work mate love it!!!!!!!!!!

you can do anything if you set your mind to it...
i rather blow it up winning than keep it together losing.

finish date set for project 1... march 2018

You can take them off with no problems, I did. My current back box is twice the size of that without skid plates as standard - lose them

I seriously doubt it!

Depends on the alloy, most aluminium grades arent able to cope with the temperatures seen in exhausts.. id look into maybe some straight lengths of titanium and carbon back box? bike cans sound wank on minis though imo

if you are serious about getting the weight down, (and it looks like you are *smiley* ) then that back box has to go! I had the exact same until i changed for a single TVR tuscan carbon fibre box which weights around 2kgs from memory. Picked it up for £30 on ebay too. Not a bad return for an approx 10kg weight saving!

drill it full of holes.

A net is just a series of holes tied together with string

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Quite a few drag orientated cars in the US are now running Alu from the turbo back.

Others do steel for a foot or two then alloy from there back.

You can buy off the shelf stuff ( although maybe larger than needed for 99% of Mini's

Or for a longer term , maybe get some perforated stainless tube and form an alloy silencer around it.

We ran an alloy silencer on our c type but it got blown to pieces I think modifying a straight through bike can with some thin wall tube is the direction I'm going I have a titanium can I'm going to tuck up under the boot floor it will look like a normal exhaust and you won't see the silencer

Speeding is like masturbating, everyone does it, but not all of us film it and put it on the internet

I've gone down the carbon/titanium silencer route, it weighs 1kg instead of 5kgs. I've been toying with an aluminium centre section for a while now too, but you would have to run a reasonable wall thickness, for it to retain its strength. I'm still on the hunt for some thin wall stainless tube instead now, as it'll probably work out to be he same weight as thicker aluminium tube, but it's not easy to find at a reasonable cost.

Jim said he ran an aluminium centre section for a while, but took it off due to noise level, so something to consider too. *oh well*

sounds pretty good i think. the 16v and 8,000rpm does help though *smiley*. Few vids on youtube i'll try to dig out. I've left the wadding in as im only just below the noise limit as is
