Also i think the Argon supplier makes a difference too, I'm on hobby weld stuff at the moment and not that inpressed.

Quite possibly, gas lenses are the main thing aI have found that effect the weld colour. I've been trying different suppliers and some are truely awful!

I noticed my welds started to discolour so first thing I did the next morning was fit a new gas lense, every weld came out get and horrible and was spitting whilst welding. I ended up fitting new gas lines, new torch new collet, and cup and still the same. I then swapped the gas lense for another new one and it was perfect, so I decided to do a test on them all. These were all welded on exactly the same settings one after another, you can see the Middle one was the faulty one! I sent this to the supplier and they just said not enough gas...they would tets the gas lense for me, but if they thought it was fine I would have to pay for test. I decided not to bother for the sake of a couple of quid, but there really is some poor quality stuff out there that can catch you out!

Well there you go, learn something new every day, I didn't know there was such a thing in existance as a gas lens for my TIG. I am self taught though!

Looks like I'm ordering a few gas lenses today! And I guess I'll do tests on them before using on something "real".

Btw, I use a professional gas supply outfit, but did get a bad bottle about a month ago. They doubted my claim, till I took in some sample coupons where I'd practiced previously on the older good gas, and laid a bead with the newer gas. Then they bent over backwards to fix it. Always good to keep a few "test pieces" on hand, with all the weld settings identified.

Well, my gas lens will be here Monday. I'm hoping this answers a few other odd things that I have noticed since I've been tig welding a lot more in the past several weeks than the previous years... The weirdest one I can't work out is when welding thin alloy (6000 or 3000) is I get a ton of arc scatter on lap welds. Doesn't happen on thicker stuff like 2mm +, just on thinner ally like 0.5 or 1mm. No problem on thin steel either; just the alloy. If this doesn't fix it, I might have to trade it in on a DX280... 😎

If it is clean ally then turn it to 70-80% penetration and reduce the base current down a bit, then turn frequency up to concentrate the pool to one area.

Aim the arc 5mm or so to the lower part of lap and use the rod to drag the pool accross to higher side. That's what I have found works, as it puts the concentration of heat on the lower piece which can dissipate the heat better and not just melt away.

The other thing Is be brave. Lol if you are too light on the pedal it'll never arc up, going to a small Tungten will also help initial arc and if the balance is set to 70-80% penetration then a smaller tungsten can be used without the end dropping off. 😄

I've tried every variable possible with my current machine; even to the point I created a fricking DOE spreadsheet to log all the variables! There is just something flaky with it on AC on the smaller current settings. Mine is a 2006 pre "blue lightning" unit, they massively improved them with the 2008 update.

Odd, 0.5mm-1mm is bloody thin for ally. So does the arc just scatter about and not fully arc up?

If so that sounds like it's just not enough current, when my foot pedal gave up and it had a flat spot on the potentiometer it would do a similar things. What amps are you set to on 1mm?

Unexpectedly bumped in to Matt yesterday who was representing his Fusion Fabrications company on a stand at Kop Hill, Princes Risborough. Matt probably wondered who was the nutter asking if his Mini had a sequential gearbox *happy*

Haha it's nice to put names to faces! It did surprise me though, lots of people asked what engine was in it, but not many clocked the gear shifter. 😀

Need to organise some TMers to go up the hill next year. 👍

I asked about it last year, but they seemed a bit funny about letting later stuff have a go.

Thats just age-ist. Its a mini...... whether 1959 or 2000, its still a mini. Little has changed

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

To be honest they have a MASSIVE list of cars to go up the hill. I know quite a few people that couldn't get a hill pass this year. Some guy called Paddy Hopkirk got to go up in an old mini, not sure why he got special treatment though. 😂 I'm going to try and get a pass next year, going to get my name down early!

My mini cleaned up well after being covered in dust for 4 years.

Good luck to anyone who wants to get an entry for a Post war car.

I went for six years on the trot with the A35 and the commentator always played up to me in the A35 as it wa so standard looking. I was even invited back for the last two years. However the people who run it have all changed and the emphasis is now on pre war cars, mainley because the origin of the event was in the 1920,s.

This year the theme was 1960,s !!!!!!

I fucked off to France for three weeks so missed this and the Revival - AND all the TV coverage !

There were quite a few modern cars going up this year, but I think a lot of them were taking passengers up. I'm hoping having a stand there will give me a bit of leverage. 😜 What I saw of the show, it was one of the best turnouts ive seen.

Hey Lads *wink*

May I ask what thicknesses have you used for the top and bottom plates ? Also is it really necessary to locate the plates with doweld to the head and block to ensure the oil seals would be truly centred to the pulleys ?
