Im using 7's as reccommened by KAD, im open to suggestions though? They tend to put 9's in there fuel injected full race engines.

I have a good spark and the petrol was put in on friday afternoon.

Champion or NGK?

I had a set of champion plugs, that were buggered after I flooded my engine, even after only 30mins of running!

I had a spark when I took the plug out, but it wasn't sparking under compression. swapped to NGK problem solved.

have you tried the obvious stuff like compression, ie cams timed in right,

On first principles you have fuel (as flooding indecates and its fresh).
Its generating a spark so assuming nothing else has happened to the engine it must be the timing of the spark. I presumme you have checked the dizzy has not moved????

The dizzy hasnt moved since the engine was built. and nothing has changed since it was built either. So i would have thought the timing is bang on.

I am going to test the voltage on the coil to see what it is, but i dont think that is the problem.

I believe that nothing has changed other than the ambient temperature, since this engine has previously been difficult to start, but it wasn't this cold.

A combination of racey cams, low compression poorly tuned cold start fueling will result in an engine that appears to refuse to start.

I say low compression since the cam combination and 10.5:1 static compression will result in a low dynamic compression depending on cam timing. I fear we have discussed this already, without any real conclusion.

What type of distributor is being used and is the right coil and balast being used with it. Don't assume that the dizzy hasn't moved, get the timing light out and check it, this engine has been handled since you've had it off the box.

The cold engine temperature is not helping. In the old days you used to be able to buy a sump heater, which was nothing more than a parafin lamp that saton the garage floor under the engine. Try and heat the engine up with an external heater. If it starts then, its likely poor cold start tune on the carbs.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Sprocket, this is the conclusion me and my dad have come to also. Im waiting now for him to get back off hols and we shall get it going, last time we bump started it. He wasnt too impressed me ringing him in kenya.

As you say the racey cams, lowish compression and being set up for 'optimum' performance doesnt and hasnt helped the cold starting. This was apparent even before the engine was taken out when the temperature dropped. I thought it was just because the engine hadnt been run in a while.

Also now everything is fully run it needs setting up on the rolling road again.

Thanks for all the help and ideas!

if your using points/condenser/coil and one of them is a bit iffy
the cold can be the final straw to the spark going out under cranking load .
the spark might be there to see , but not good enough under compression to fire .

change the coil , condenser , rotor arm dizzy cap , [leads if you got a spare set .
warm the plugs . get a back up jumper battery . 6-8 pumps of the throttle , brummmm , keep softly pumping throttle when it starts to fire , them webbers dont like idling until warm [ they come from Italy ]

Finally its fucking running, what a game! ended up just starting replacing stuff to see if anything wasnt working. Put new plugs in and it started first time.

Been out for a drive in it with the new final drive of 3.6 and its seems spot on, bit o a handful.
