been sorting out some more wiring bugs today.. think i have them all fixed now - but only time will tell.

Made another bracket for the radiator as it would move a bit - now its loads better, so now its taxed, mot'd and insured.

Looks like its test drive time tomorrow! see if i have a chance of getting this to Avon this year!

cheers Pauly, will give you a shout but i dont think i will be in the mini :(

Been out in the car today and the outcome wasn't good.

It started off fine, drove well, throttle response was great and it tracked really well nice and straight..

The problem came when i was shifting through the gears - following the first time i selected 5th the subsequent gear changes became difficult.. so a took it back to the garage keeping it in 3rd.

Looks like once the 5th is selected it stays that way..

I've changed the 5th in this box so can only assume i have done something wrong, no idea what though as it went together as it came off.. I have a spare box so will swap them over, but its an engine out job.

Has your selector mechanism thingy unadjusted itself?

Nope, I can still select all the other gears.. But 5th is permanently also selected.. The vauxhall gear box has the 5th kind of bolted to the end, I can get access to this by moving an end plate - I can then manually deselect 5th not sure why it stays selected tho.

It stays in fifth becAuse the box wants you to stay flat out everywhere... (Couldn't resit sorry)

Silly question but out of interest, did you at all attempt to knock it out of 5th with the clutch depressed?

Yep the gear selector won't go into 5th now.. Will have a look at it in a bit, lunch and beer has helped me calm down a bit. :)

So 5th is the only problem, does the linkage all looks good?
Nothing catching?

Yep, it's the box not the linkage - if I try and start it now ( being in neutral) it's jumps forward as the 5th is still engaged.

right - had the end plate off and and the 5th synchro is jammed.. also found the circlip that holds the gear on in 3 bits.

No idea how this has happened..

If i get time during the week i will take it all off and see if there is any other damage..

fingers crossed if it is bust the i can just take the 5th gear from my spare box and replace it without pulling the engine.

Thought i would post a post op of the 5th gear.

The bronze part should float however this one is solid now also locked just off line to the rest of the gear which i think is why it locked. You can also see a chipped tooth - probably caused when the circlip broke.

Opted to just rebuild the original gear i took off the box and slot that back in..

Just took it for a short blast and it seems ok :) but i have a few things to do before its usable.

Definitely needs a rolling road session.

Hi, been off line for a while moving house so been really busy!

Well it's mot'd and running well.. But with one problem. I have been hunting for some lost horses, don't get me wrong it's a quick mini but sadly not really a quick car!!

I have been scratching my head for ages trying to find the problem, thing is it runs very well but just doesn't produce the pace I was expecting.

Just before the house move sorting out my spare block when I came accross the engine number, looked it up and confirmed it to be the 1600 gsi, great. Then checked the one in the car.. Less great. At first it was hidden under paint etc but it soon revealed the lost power.. A 1400.

I bought it as a 1600 but you live and learn! Know what you buying and don't take someone's word for it as they could know as little as you about it!!

I'm sure the guy I bought it from sold it with good intentions so no hard feelings.. But I now have the job of fitting another engine, it's not to bad just need to get my tools out of storage and crack on.. Or look for an 1800.. Watch this space :)

Oh no, I feel your pain. what a bummer.

That said I've seen an all steel 1400 hillclimb engine on the rolling road and that made some very good power.

Robert, no its mapped for the 1600, and on itb's from SBD for a larger cubic capacity so I'm aware that wont be ideal.

ah fair enough ,do you think that 200 cc will make a big diff ?
maybe time for a turbo instead ?:)

Haha always time for a turbo :)

In my current setup the 1400 has about 100 horses the 1600 should have 160 and the 1800 a few more.
