OK guys, I need advice

Big time.

I've got 11 weeks and 2 days before I drive the mini to the Ring again.

I'm rather fortunate, in that I have a fairly decent lump of spares in the garage.

so, of these two options, which should I go for? Given the time contraints....

Option 1: Swiftune 1380 - I've got a brand new unfired swifty short engine, mig spec A+ crank/rods, powermax pistons, 296 scatter cam, minispares belt drive, CMS.
Coupled with the MED roadcomp head I have, it'll give 10.9:1 CR, and I'll run it with my current 45DCOE, and fit megajolt, Billet fly, SCCR box, all the bits.

OR

Option 2:

I've got a set of 18cc accralites in +020, coupled with my 20.5cc Roadcomp head will give me 8.5:1 CR. I've got a gizzmo MS IBC already, 3 VAG intercoolers to try, a brand new turbo carb and a plenum. I'll also have by the end of the week a custom stainless manifold for a GT17 from matty, but I can't afford a GT17 to fit it :(

What I'd do is find a block to have bored, and build it up with either the mig spec crank and rods from the spare engine, or use the mk3 S crank and midget 625 rods from the engine that's just blown.

I'm buying megajolt in the next week or so.

I jsut need to decide what to do!

Drop in the fully built 1380 short engine I've already got, or rush along the turbo, and just run it low boost for now to the ring in septmeber? Even on 8-10psi I should see over 120bhp shouldn't I?

got a head sorted already mate, with the 18cc accralite pistons, a 20.5cc roadcomp head will give me 8.5:1 CR

It's just a case of trying to get a turbo motor built, installed, and running properly in 12 weeks, or just dropping in another lairy 1380 that I know where I stand with....

Put the NA engine in. 12 weeks is pushing it as do not under estimate all the work involved with a turbo install, exhaust fabrication, intercooler installation and pipes, and then run in and set up.

Thanks Tom, that sounds like sensible advice, and its' what my head is telling me to do as well.

I've been collecting parts for a turbo build for some time now, and I'd hate to have to rush it at the last minute. It's just at times like these ideas pop into your head, I guess you just have to squash them!

I think I'll drop in the 1380 in the next week or so, and be happy with it for a little while longer.

Cheers for all the advice chaps, I'll keep this updated as and when I make progress.

sack off taking the mini to the ring, you dont wanna risk stacking it into the barried which you so nearly did last time and that was with less power! just go in the audi!

then start the turbo project now and just dont rush it.

I don't see why that hed is scrap. Why not fit an insert? If it's already got an unleaded insert, fit a bigger one...

easy!

Look closely above the inlet valve V, the broken valve had has punctured a large hole through to the water gallery, the hole is about 20mm long and 4mm wide

OK, so I've had a good think about it, and there's not a chance I can afford to do the turbo setup as well as I'd want to, so I'm going to accept defeat on that one and do a nice job on the NA 1380.

I'd be wanting to fit a front mounted rad, megajolt, and a denso alternator to either engine, and the budget just doesn't stretch to building the turbo short engine as well as doing the above.

On the bright side, it'll mean that when I do come to drop in the turbo lump, it'll already have the front rad, megajolt and smaller alt setup and working, so one less thing to worry about when the time comes.

Time to get ordering i think.....

Cheers chaps, Just ordered a new cambelt and seals from minispares, and a friend at work has a DTi I'll be using on Saturday morning to check the cam timming.

I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to timing in cams, is there any way of checking the cam timing without removing the belt? or any decent guides on how to time it in?

It's a kent 296 scatter, which I've been told I should time at 106 degrees.

Any thoughts?

Tadah! Thanks to Tom Fenton

http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=4769

You should be able to check cam timing no problems without removing belt if you can get protactor in end of crank and get a marker to show TDC.
