I have no idea Jonny. I checked the head nuts every morning all weekend, so I am not sure.

I have one more sat here to go back in it from minispeed. If that goes, I will go down to see James.

It looks like all of the fire rings are fucked, but that could of been the drive I had to do to get it to the services.

What was your engine temp like? It was a very hot day yesterday. Could have pushed it into det if the ignition map is aggressive and it all got a bit warm. Did you spend much time stuck behind hgvs etc?

That's not an under-torqued failure. that is det. You know the causes, so no need for me to repeat them here.

same happened to me on wednesday, minispares bk450,

mine was probably the map / poor fuel & right foot combination.

hope there not too much other damage.

What the mind can conceive the mini can achieve

To be honest as soon as you drop a cylinder, turn it off and park it up wherever you happen to be. By driving it you risk it cutting into the top of the block and then you have a much bigger problem.

Just to add. there is det across all 4 cylinders looking at the gasket. I'd check your map and maybe see if the trigger wheel has moved.

Good point Wil! What the MJLJ says and what is happenign can sometimes be quite different. I believe this is what cost mike a set of pistons.

Yes I think some RR time is in order... The only thing that is new on that side, is one of Toms brackets.

Taz mate, its one of them New fangled not so smart touch screen phones that loves doing s==t like that....

think you have your answer there then maybe if its not total align with TDC; maybe the new wheels have a different missing tooth for the newer bracket? have you married them up to check on tbc when rebuilding the engine?

haha gave me a chuckle as i was walking around town, hopefully no trouser snake texting going on!

My bank holiday weekend started on Friday with the drive to Newquay. All was well on the drive down with all the engine temps fine and the Mk1 driving very well. Then 10 miles away from the camp site, my mate started flashing me so I started to pull over and I saw that the oil pressure had dropped, so I killed it.
When I got out to see what was going on I found that all my nice new Millers oil was under the car!!! I worked out that the oil cooler was leaking from what seems like inside, so I started to bypass the cooler whilst my mate shot off to find some oil at 18:00 ish at night! He ended up finding some comma 20/50 for £9.99, a big come down from the Millers ctv, but needs must.
With the new oil in we were on the road again, 5 miles in I was down on power so I nursed it the last bit to the camp site and when I had a look I worked out that one of the plug leads had come lose. Popped it back on and job done! Beer O’clock.

All day Saturday the car was fine, apart from the 5ltrs of oil that had soaked into the exhaust wrap that covers most of the system, so every time I stopped it looked like my engine builder was James Watt.

Sunday started with what sounded like someone was doing the river dance on the roof of the caravan, but it turned out someone in the group we were with thought they would feed the birds on our roof!! As I was, let’s just say, very hung over there was no cleaning done on the car! I drove the car down to the show and shine, as it’s always good to cause a bit of controversy with the with mk1 community, locked it up and went back to the van for one of Jo’s breakfasts and a sleep lol. The show was ok, with lots of chatting to lads from TM and then “Norman bad cardigan” came to judge the car. After I showed him the car he said well done for what I have done to it so that’s a turn up, as last time he marked me down because it wasn’t all original/restored. Then it was beer time again! Before bed time we made sure we did are bit for the RSPB on next doors van roof..

Monday we set off at 12.00 to drive back and now this was the first time ever that I did not want to drive the MK1 as my head was not working its best. We set off and it was all going well until we had done 173 miles and then the head gasket went. It was clearly AA time so we pulled in to the big services so we could get some scoff at the same time. On the phone I told the woman that the head gasket had gone and that a truck was needed for the lift home as the Mk1 was too low. 40mins later a man in a van turned up, I told him what was wrong with it and he told me “I will be the judge of that”! Now I would hate anyone telling me how to do my job, but you only have to look at the car to see that I know a little bit about it. So 30mins of pissing about and he told me it was a head gasket lo!l and that he could not fix it. I said “I am not putting my car on that dolly” he finally saw sense and said he will order a truck. 65mins later and a young lad turned with a truck he said it was better that I drive it on there! I was like, ok cool, we ended up getting home at 22.40 last night!

What have I learned this weekend ?--
Oil coolers can split under normal driving.
Millers 20/50 ctv takes forever to burn off.
My wife can drive the Mk1 and she can do auto test lol.
I need 2 bottom gearbox steadys as well.
Don’t drink beer, after-shock, sambuca, apple sourz, champagne and wine all on the same night!

Sounds you could have been lucky. Get that map and ignition checked!

They did exactly the same to me! Exact same problem, exact same phone call and exact same events followed. Told this guy the head gasket had gone, he continued to remove the plugs, take the dipstick out and put it on the floor, took the rocker off and threw the gasket away and then turned around and said 'yeah your head gaskets gone'.

He tried to get me topot it on the dolly, I said no as the 10s are too small to put on a dolly securely, and I wanted it on a truck. He even got the dolly out, and measured it up for size! Twat.

Good write up thou bud, still one of my favourite cars on TM.

the trouble with the breakdown services is that they have targets to try and meet. they have more vans than recovery trucks so will send whatever they can to you quickest; this way they can say they attend to your breakdown within 30 mins etc - all for the TV add campaigns etc. Hence, they will send out anyone to you to achieve said target.

In addition, there are plenty of us that can tell over the phone exactly what is wrong and why we need recovered, however there are plenty of drivers out there who know sweet feck all about cars but claim to know everything and can quite easily be proved wrong by a roadside mechanic so I don't blame the guys checking, frustrating as it is.
