Nice one Graham, looks like it's all coming together nicely now.

Life is always a matter of opinion and quite frankly, no ones opinion really matters.

Thanks all it's been a steep learning curve , the next thing is to get it moving... Run it and the setup checked at my local rolling road.

I'm hunting to find a larger bike carb after my h's carb won't fit... I'm looking at a hsr, but I need to check its ok...

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

I have been getting the car ready for the rollers, the clutch master cylinder is knackered. I have pulled it off and its full of black goo. I have a new one ready to drop in and a nice Force slave.... so should sort that.

I have been on the internet, which is dangerous and used some calculators to work out the air flow at 12psi and the carb i have. My existing carb seems way under what is needed, I think this was shown when I upped the boost on the old engine and it didnt make any more power just got there quicker.

I have ordered a mikuni HSR45 hopefully this should give me enough flow, I will just have to be easy with the throttle....

not much... need to pull my finger out a bit.

The slave has been replaced with a Carl Austin Special as I was sick of replacing the std ones each year.
I have also replaced the Clutch MC as the old one was shot.
I replaced plate underneath the MC's for a billet jobbie just to be a tart.

I need to put the pins back in and bleed the system....

OH and I have a shiny brand spanking new 45mm Mikuni HSR carb.... mmmmmmm so its off to the rollers and hopefully a bit more power as the old 38 was maxed out on the flow figures according to some web calcs...

Cant make the L2B this year so not sure when it will all be used in anger... Who knows if the engine will hold together, if the diff ratio is any good etc..

And you?

Carb sounds good. Why not bring it to Avon and use it in anger?

Plodding on. Just having a nutritious lunch of pot noodle, peperami and cashew nuts, then of out to refurb my charger. Will try and update my thread soon...

ok, so I had some time today so, had a nice easy afternoon in the garage just went slow and enjoyed it.

I bled the brakes and then the clutch, The new MC and Force slave cylinder looks great.
I setup the clutch as per the factory, so .020" gap between the arm and the stop nut, set the throw out nuts and then went for a spin..

I have forgot what great fun the mini is. The gear change seems smooth, and the engine rev's freely without vibration.

SO I let the car warm checked everything over, The wide band showed good fuelling, so I let it rev to 5K and it got there quick... I had a big grin trying to act cool in the sun... then I heard a rattle, like a bolt bouncing under the car....

I let my foot off had a look in the rear view and all I could see was smoke out the bad. I just managed to stop my Bombay doors from opening, I pulled off the main road and stopped the car, Steam from under the bonnet.

I had a look and there was coolant everywhere, so I'm busy looking for a split pipe and then I found this...

SO I called the wife and tried to explain what a core plug was, anyway sometime later she turned up with a new core plug a hammer, some coolant and a bar....

I presume that I just hadn't hammered in in correctly? the others are ok.

So what causes this User error?

well, its been around the block a few times... smells a bit oily to me maybe its breathing heavier until its run in a bit more...

Next stop the rollers so I can get the new carb fitted and tuned it as its still running on the old one at the mo.

Warwick.

If you havent got it sorted and you get chance, remove the core plugs, clean the surfaces of rust etc with some emary paper then coat this surface with some sealing compound such as hylomar,
Find a socket which is roughly the diameter of the inside of the core plug and use this to knock in the core plug straight. this will prevent damage to the sealing surfaces of the new core plug

ok so it went to the rolling road to get some tuning done on the new HSR45 carb.

Now I was a bit nervous as its my first engine build, and I was worried to see if it was any good.

I drove it down on the old carb. We did some test runs on that carb under different loads with some running in oil. The operator said the engine seemed ok so the day started like this.... (A mate who and come along to see if one of the con rods would end up in the ceiling..)

Dropped the oil and filter, did some spanner work and swapped out the carb

Now this is where things started to turn. we noticed an oil patch on the floor. the 1/2 moon was leaking.. pisser.

The HSR proved to be hard to get tuned. we just cant get enough fuel at the to end.. I have since found that you can get some upgrades for high performance applications. they include

Larger accelerator pump and nozzle
main jet extension
pressurised float needle and seat

All now on order...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fp5cfS1Jho...fFR5tcsQAV8ohyA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZnNqo1F9F8...fFR5tcsQAV8ohyA

So we gave up and chucked the old carb on. driving home I was going very slow and then I noticed some white smoke out the back. I thought it was oil on the exhaust, then it got worse, I was free wheeling and instinct said to shut it off, I hit the key and knocked it out of gear.
The garage towed me back to have a quick look. We took the lugs out and turned it over and shot water out of the plug holes....

So I stripped it today and took the timing cover and back plate off, I found a small gap in the 1/2 moon seal and block, can you pull the seal out and hammer a new one in without splitting the block and box?

Well I found the issue. I know the head gasket used was a shite one, (Even if it came from minispares as a show), The piston crowns look ok, no pitting, so hopefully all is ok. looks like it needs more work on the fuelling and timing. This is where I have had the car tuned since 2007 and I have never had an issue, maybe its the decom plate. something I have never used before. I know the decom plates are a crap idea but then piston and the fact that I cant get any more out of the head left me with no option.

That's a shitter, but at least it's not fatal for the new engine.

I think Rover used to fill the gaps in the half moon with a shit load of sealant. I doubt you would get a good seal trying to put a new one in with the gearbox still attached.

That was my thought Andy, nothing else leaks so I was going to use a little RTV and put it back together...

Going to use copper gaskets and see where we go from there. I was lucky not to lock it with the water in the cylinder..
