Through Tom, Im build up a hack rig my self I'm going to base it on a Cove Handjob XC frame an a set of fox forks. Hard tails are so much fun for hacking around the woods :)

True story, me an the missus went to Sherwood pines today an they have a good few miles of woods/singletrack to hack round on. Even on the family route it still manages to make everything mega fun.

The finished article...

Superstar components CG, shimano SLX mech, shifter an cassette. Rides awesome, such fun to just point it towards some trails an just keep it flowing.

Can anyone recommend a decent seat post for all mountain riding? I'm not after some super light weight thing I just want something that does the job as the coating is coming of my OEM one which is causing it to stick a bit when I adjust the saddle height.

I really like my bikehut post I've got on now, Micro adjust an comes in 400mm, just does the job I suppose. Just grease it slightly before you put it in, its scratched all the finish on mine altering it.

I'd use copper slip rather than grease on the seat post

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Well after weeks of deciding whether to upgrade my GT or buy a new bike I finally sorted it out.

Here is the new toy, Boardman comp

Really impressed with the quality and finish of the whole thing, it it comes in at about 11.5 kg which is nice.

This also means this nice low mileage GT is for sale if anyone is interested?

Its an 18" frame, will get a proper for sale up later hopefully.

I'm thinking about getting a push bike. Getting a bit flabby. Used to enjoy lugging 20KG of pig iron round when I was a lad.

Any recommendations for something basic for somebody who is too tall and horrifically unfit??

Something like this? You are getting on a bit.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

i would go second hand in that case, bikes are worth half what they are new even if there mint, you'll get plenty more for your money that way.

the bearings are what you need to worry about mainly, as long as theres not any or much play in stuff like the hubs bottom bracket and headset, you'll be fine.

Kean - just looking at your ad....

Chears for the advice George. Been a few years since I had one in bits, but it's all coming back slowly

Picked up my new bike yesterday (thanks Kean). *smiley* Just been out for a wobble round for 45 minutes. I've remembered why I used to enjoy it so much when I was a lad. Seen lots of places I didn't know where there (not that I looked before). When I stop feeling like I'm going to puke, I'm going to collapse in a heap. Glad I bought it. *smiley*

That sounds like a place a chap at work was telling me about this aft. Plenty of raised platforms in the woods and stuff like that. looked good fun

Funnily enough I bought Nick's old bike the other week and this afternoon put the road tyres on it and went out and did a few miles.
It will take me a while to get back used to it, I haven't riden a bike anywhere of any consequence (e.g. anywhere that isn't the pub) for years.
Did quite enjoy it though, although its amazing all the hills you notice that don't seem to be there in the car!

I quite fancy having a ride up that wooded bit between centenary way and moorgate. Looks like it could be a bit of fun.

Up to Norfolk Castle, I often see groups of mountain bikers parked in the laybys at the bottom so there must be some trails up there. I'd join you but I need to get a bit fitter first I think.
