thank you, i'll be happier once i got the lilttle bits, wiring finally tidied and done; oh and an MOT too then to get it rr'd

also considering getting a 10psi spring rather than the 1bar one i am running at the mo as my comp is about 9:1 which will mean my engine wont last long. i do have a new old head that i will send off to get worked by the magical ppl on this forum but all in good time :)

ok well bit of an update ish and a bit of advice if possible.

so i've won a boost gauge on ebay and ordered vac hose and some exhaust wrap so when that rocks up i'll sort that out.

also ive decided to change my spring from 1bar to an 8.7 psi. my very basic q is if possible is my engine is a 1293, t2 with IC and the said psi what power you think i could exepct and if my comp is 9:1 what max psi could i go up to safely? i know there are other things to consider but as a rough guess?

i almost forgot i had a car then......

i've done nothing to it sadly, its just i had a really busy quarter and well i'm imagining that we will now get snow jan-mar time so theres no rush to get it finihsed.

although all that needs doing is plugging in headlights and indicators and tidying up the screamer pipe outlet. but lost motivation at the moment.

on a brighter note i though i would use something genious to protect my screamer pipe from filling up with water/snow/flies/cattle over the winter.

safety first by lilpinkiy, on Flickr

also pretty chuffed it first for the first time with no issues in the freezing cold last week and ran perfect :) gave me some hope.

Speeding is like masturbating, everyone does it, but not all of us film it and put it on the internet

Wastegate chatter myth

There is confusion in the automotive world about so called "wastegate chatter" or "turbo flutter". A noise created on lifting off the throttle in a turbocharged car, commonly described as a chipmunk or a rattlesnake, is often stated incorrectly as being a result of the turbo's wastegate closing.
The noise is in fact the air compressed by the turbo passing back through the compressor wheel of the turbo after the airflow is abruptly halted by the throttle plate closing, called compressor surge. However, in some cases, i.e. where the throttle plate doesn't open fast enough or is set up to only react to high boost, some chatter will remain. Surge can occur on diesels when the turbo is attempting to pressurize the air at a higher pressure ratio than the compressor wheel can flow at a given speed. Diesel engines have no use for a blow off valve as they do not have a throttle plate.

The chatter noise is very noticeable on World Rally Cars, where anti-lag is used.
A compressor stall like this can cause excess stress and wear on the turbo's shaft or bearings under higher load applications of the turbo (around 15 psi (1.00 bar) and greater depending on the trim and flow rate of the compressor side).

Actual wastegate flutter occurs instead under partial boost conditions such as partial throttle near the boost threshold. It sounds like FftFftFft not ShuShuShu and is caused by the rapid opening and closing of the wastegate at boost levels near the spring pressure. It is commonly heard more clearly and may be more prominent on cars with modified intake silencers, up-pipes, and or downpipes, and is not harmful.

so how would you set a car up to make that flutter sound then?

As stated in t@z's post, its due to the wastegate opening and closing on partial throttle near the boost threshold. Sounds really good my the way. :)

Mmmmm that's really interesting, I tought I was hearing det but it might just of been the waste gate fluttering.
More testing needed I reckon.

it did have a slight missfire on pick up near the begining! the point at which you see the camera go to the screamer is when it started to grown at me and kinda shocked me (hence the rush camera change and the coming off the throttle) as i was just trying to get it warm.

needs setting up as only has the std needle in it at the mo. but wasnt run for long and the std is ok for idle.

today has been a mammoth mini weekend. yesterday i helped lee with his mini and doing a few bits on that and today was a busy day on mine!

i just wanna say thanks to lee as without him i would have given up about 1130 this morning.

basically mechanically it ran it needed a few things sorted for MOT etc.

so today we.....

- headlights (this was a pain as it kept shorting, blowing fuses and we never knew why. turned out it was a lose bulb holder on the back of the center clock making a connection; massive ball ache. also had to clean the connector)

- side lights & indicators

- rewire incl inline switch for aux fan

- windscreen wipers and washer jets

- horn

- bonnet strap(s)

- exhaust wrap screamer pipe & re cut end to tidy it up.

- had a few other niggly delays like dash light's not working and gernally checking everything for an MOT etc

so anyway i need to hover it and tidy the dash up again; i sure there is probably something else but at the moment i cant really think. been a busy weekend!!!!

well yesterday i set about trying to get those lil niggly bit done.

i started out by finishing spraying the underside of my bonnet to make it a bit tidier/cleaner/brighter.

then set about the interior. basically took it all out and gave it a scrub down with a wire brushed and hovered all the carpets/floor. Now that was tidierrrr i went over with some primer and relayed the carpets.

once that was all in i just fitted the drivers seat and put the dash back together as it was out from last weeks efforts. spent a lot of time trying to find bits n bobs as im not the most tidiest guy :s

i let my last chore til last as i wasn't really looking forward to it. basically my engine wasnt getting a rpm reading. bit of looking and tuned out i had put the pip wire 2 in and not 3 so now im stuck with trying to find the silly pin things from the molex plug. i'm hoping maplins will be the saving grace for that today. also need to go to b&q and get some bolts for the bottom front engine steady.

will let you know how i get on later but i think its nearly there for an MOT :)

Don't get bolts from B&Q. They have metric and imperial bolts classed as the same thing (e.g. M8 as 5/16 unf). They are close, but they are not the same...

i didnt in the end i read this and you stopped me; minispares order incoming i think although it will be tiny. i got molex connector with pins 1.99 from maplins, fingers crossed the pins work but today i really cant be bothered with working on the thing and my sister has squished me in so i cant even get in it.

got a new spot lamp so will work out engine steady today and order those bits if needed and fix mj tomorrow night.
