looks good. So going slow will stop any wandering/wobble due to the length of the bore?

Awesome ! Are you going to make a base for the mill, or just bolt it to the workbench ?

I also have the same clock.

That's a clock?, I though it formed a part of the best.

Looks good anyway, you can barely see the join!!!

Some progress at last!!

I spent several hours yesterday making a clamp to hold the box to the bed, and making some jacking screws to clock the shaft square.

Clocking up the main shaft square with the original shaft position. Accross the entire length the best I got it was +/- .03mm which was better than I thought.

After centre drilling came the pilot drilling, then the 1st extended drill.

After boring it to 38mm.

The next job is to drill and ream the bores to 40mm, then make some bungs up and try a secon mock shaft in place and check the centre distances at both ends of the shafts before going to the final bore size.

Matt, I salute you. You achieve miracles, especially given your workspace (which is barely big enough for someone my size to enter, never mind work )

Cheers Dave, as you can probably tell I have moved the mill out of the shed and into the garage as the shed wasn't tall enough! *hehe!* I have been offered and bridgport sized mill at work, but I think trying to squeeze that in might be asking a bit much!

have you thought about after testing and usage doing a kit for this in the future?

cant wait to see the final product :)

I was thinking orginally of doing a kit, but I think its gone well beyond something simple to make now. *hehe!* I have drawings for all the parts I have made though. *wink*

After lots of chatter when boring out the holes, ive made some new boring bars now and a new cutter tip...fingers crossed they cut better! I have another idea if the longer boring bar chatters, but that means making something else...

Hi Matt,

congratulations with the progress you made! Happy you found motivation again. Boring the holes is quite a hurdle to take!
I am very curious how accurate your final result will be for the hart-hart distance on both sides.

You write about chatter. Always horrible to experience that. Would that be related to the cutting angle / speed and kind of cooling you used?

My own project had some silent period due to waiting for the blocks of aluminium. But they arrived today. I hope to start making the jigsaws soon.
And within one and half week I will be discussing the production of the shafts with my CNCproto cousins in Czech republic....

cheers, Bart

Its been a while since I updated this. Over the xmas holidays I got cracking on the machining. It was slow progress boring out both holes then making sleeves up to the bore size to check centre to centre distances, but I got there in the end. My last measurement on the centre to centre distances was 65.05mm but I'll double check with the bearings in as ive taken out 2mm since then.

I then made some mock shafts to check the gear meshes and to check my calculations of the where selector shaft drilling needs to be...I may need to offset the bores as I think 65mm may be too much clearance now, which means going up a bearing size. *oh well* The selector shaft location was bang on where I thought it should be though, which was a result!

I need to counter bore the top plate to allow room for the extra gear on the 1st motion now.

Pics to follow.

I made some centre gauges up as I couldn't get anything into the centre web to measure the centres. These were made 64.5mm so in theory with a 0.5mm feeler they'd be bang on 65mm centres.

Mock shafts used for measuring centre distances.

The gears in mesh.

Marking out selector shaft.

Checking fitment of bearing.
