I've got a dent on one of my cam belt pulleys, I also changed the belt. When even my car is driven by someone else I always tell them to cut the engine asap if they end up in the kitty litter

AHh right yeah I was thinking that I want it for road use :] and ahh what belts do they use?

For a road driven car personally a cam belt cover is a must.
On the DON we changed the cam belt as the one on the car somehow developed a semi circular "tear" in the centre of the belt width - it was still running with this - only theory is that some foreign object must have caused it. Obviously we fitted a new one.

I was told if you watch track racing and see a car heading off into the stones, often they will lock up the wheels on purpos to stall the engine. even with decent cam cover, you can sometimes still get objects in there depending on the size of them.

To be honest ive never had a problem (well maybe I have just been lucky!).

I have gone throught a big enough puddle to hydraulic my engine and the belt stayed on fine also.

Ive never thought about gravel traps though, and as im planning on doing more track days, a cover may be something to consider. *oh well*

we`ve been running OHC full race speedway engines for literally 30plus years with no cam covers at all , & no problemo

mud & crap & dirt & rocks & you name it & not one problem

theory is that the covers may well hold/keep the crap in there "Causing" all the muck to have a better chance of dramas

Have you got a couple of photos and a description of what is required, I can approach a company I use and see if they will do it.

Chalkie - I just need to bore out the bearing location, ive been trying to find a way/place since February. *oh well*

Cheers Tom, they're sending it back to me now. Im going to try and talk someone at work into giving it a go. They machine much more complex castings than this all day its just trying to get someone to stay on one day to do it.

The good news, the second shaft is machined, and the gear is being cut as we speak, then it just needs hardening and grinding. :)

Cheer up Matt, pity when something goes slower than expected and you can't blame yourself. Anyway the boring of the bearing locations is the up-or-under for the success of the project.
Great to read about the second shaft being machined, another milestone!

Yesterday I had an OK from a friend for boring the bearing locations, including pockets for the circlips. Happy me.
Today at work I discussed last details for welding preparations
Tomorrow I will visit a motorbike shop for doing measurements in the gearbox of a Blackbird. If not sure I hope to borrow the gearbox for 3D measuring.
Then I hope to get my blocks of aluminium in the coming weeks.
For 1st detail discussion of shafts I have to be patient till 3rd week of January when I meet my family in law in Czech Republic (2x CNC specialist at R&D dept of some famous czech car brand..)
I'm not in a hurry but if I would manage to have the box ready before the end of March I will spank it for 1200 km (illegal) rally in Belgian Ardennes, German Eiffel and Mosel area .....

cheers , Bart

Noblesse oblige.. I have to inform you about my findings of measurements, Matt.

I had the privilege to disassemble a Bliackbird engine/box. As I assumed the Japs used just regular sizes for the distances, this has been confirmed. So for that reason with my Blackbird box I go to 70.00 mm shaft distance.
regards, Bart

Precision machine in Bolton,

I have used these guys in the past to mate two different main shaft halves together, they will do the machining in terms of the cup and the spigot and then can send it away for electron beam welding/trueing, but rarely need trueing because of the accuracy / consistancy of the process ...:)

However the beam welders do think they can take as long as they frickin well want.....

Have also had the guys at bolton weld alloy bosses into proto type gear box housings for fun...TD16V will certainly recommended those guys.

Garlic Bread and butter to these boys :)

I think brocky meant http://www.motorsportcomponents.co.uk - but I'm not sure if they have a horizontal boring mill - which is what I think you are looking at to do the job properly.

Im not getting too down about it, but like you say everything rests on being able to get the bores in the correct place.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll have a look into them.

Ive been keeping myself busy rebuild my short engine, and modifying my cylinder head.

I made these this evening as I can't keep forking out £50 on guide seals everytime I take my head apart...they do the job nicely! *happy*

The second gearbox shaft is all done now, just waiting for it to turn up in the post now. And im waiting to catch my boss at a good point to see if I can machine my casing at work. We had a new CNC delivered on Thursday, so im hoping I can machine it on there after xmas. Ive started machining a few other parts needed for the box, but nothing that warrants a photograph. :)

For a machining noob like myself, any part that has been made needs photographs! They're a thing of beauty

They will be pics along with the parts they fit to. *wink*

Some progress at last...Now im not sure if this is the first sign of going mad or a stroke of genius, im sure once I start the machining I'll know soon enough! *hehe!* Anyway one modified hobby mill/vertical boring machine. *happy*

Ive fitted a bigger motor with inverter control and extended the base by 420mm to give me machining clearance. Ive made several boring bars, the one shown is the final one I'll use to take the bores out to the finished size. I'll be making several dummy bearings as I go with a dummy shaft to check end to end distances. Clocking it square will be a case of shimming im thinking...should be an intersting task.

Ingenious, but the length of that boring bar will make it a very delicate operation, wont it ?.
