was going to post that up, i couldnt belive it when he sent me the pic. Hes literally only just finished the engine, was rolling roaded a few months back and only has a couple of thousand miles on the clock. Hes bringing the gearset over for inspection next week as we fear the laygear is similarly toast :(

surely they must realise that these layshafts simply arnt upto the job if a stg3 998 engine can toast one in 2,000 miles.

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

i think a few companies will jump on the bandwagon, lets hope the JKD one and others are good items.

Just been told that the layshaft pictured from robs 998 had been hardened to some extent.

im shocked tbh *oh well*

yeah i was at the RR shootout yesterday with rob. I thought it sounded more like a shagged idler bearing, but then he mentioned it was a minispares shaft. didnt expect to see it that bad though after 1500 miles in a thou ffs!

Just took a 7 year old Minispares "comp" Layshaft out of mine and for those who dont know, its 1380, 150 Baldwins, regular 9000rpm, 4.1 diff etc.
The shaft has just started to wear a little on the smaller end, but to be honest Im thinking of putting it back in for this year as its probably better than whats on the current market by the sounds of it.
Paul

I seriously doubt it!

I saw said shaft from the thou yesterday, its actually worse than the pictures suggest - the amount of material removed is insane.

He tried a minisport for a replacement shaft after they were rumoured to have good ones, but alas it wasnt hardened at all. Infact it was rusty.

stowmaket suffolk

be care full wre you saw, eg i sawed a gen rover on the step and it was soft as putty, then tried on the running surface and was hard as f@ck and didnt even scratch it.

my opion on layshafts is its a bloody mine field to what you get,

if you can use and old one out of a stanard box if its good.

and use to quality oil like millers cvt.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

I just file tested a 22G931 layshaft and, well, it scratched incredibly easily. Needless to say, I'll not be installing it.

Oh, it came from a Mini Spares supplier here in the US (not minimania).

I just received a bunch of layshafts from Australia. Cannot file them , but they are supposed to be the business. Let's find out. Not cheap, but that's OK, I don't want cheap layshafts.

Could you get them tuftrided/nitrided? I have a book somewhere that explains how to do the commercial process in your shed.

I can't see why not, how are they hardened anyway? Is it just "case hardened" which is a bit hit and miss.

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

Hmm after reading this, my layshaft could well be a MS one? Did anyone find a good alternative to a genuine one?
