So yesturday, we made a rubber cone compression tool and today we had to test it out, first one wen on smoothly then the second one I did up so tight it stripped the thread on the tool.

Left it for a bit and sanded the cowling ready for paint tomorrow and here are todays pictures:

the tool:

Finished subframe many hours later

Okay so I stayed home from Coventry for another week so heres what I've done today:

I was going to just bolt on the radiaor cowling and make do, but it looked like shit and didnt want my engine bay looking rubbish so i stripped it down with a wire brush and then painted it and the engine steady in etch primer:

Next I mounted the vr sensor bracket and bolted on my new engine mounts:

Stood around chatting to my dad and my uncle for a bit then I took the carb and plenum off of the inlet as I know on the 998 I had to take the carb off of the manifold to get it out bottom so i figure itll be the same with this so took it off:

Painted the cowling and steady up:

Just needs lacquer tomorrow :)

Went to mount the fan had this issue:

Bugger!

Chucked 2 washers on each of the bolts:

Some of the blades cleared but others didnt? WTF?

So I got some advice on here and was told I had to bray the breather so here we are this is witht he blad that ran the closest out of all 6:

So heres the engine after today:

Tomorrow:

I have to
build my turbo
mount both manifolds and the turbo
Plumb all that I can in
Get engine in the car (hopefully)

I had one of them fans a few years back, same as yours and never fit, either hit the breather, spaced out enough to clear meant there wasn't enough room for my fat radiator.

Looking at you VR sensor bracket, you may want to try & beef it up a bit. If it vibrates around when driving you'll have all kinds of issues. :)

I will add, although I don't condone it, that my VR sensor bracket was even thinner than 3mm, and the MJ never missed a beat with it.

I would also recommend that you get a decent sensor bracket though.

The 3mm isn't the problem, its the length from any fixed support to the sensor. Get any kind of revs on and that will be wanking about like a cock in a sock. I have my stainless versions on the shelf, £60 posted.

The alternative could be to add another piece of metal to the original bracket you have, going left over to that bolt closest on the timing cover. Should stop it wobbling about with the extra support.

Okay so today I carried on with the metal fan that I assumed I had fixed... NAUT

So bolted the cowling on and guess what the fan hits it:

The other side of the fan is like this:

FUCK IT, threw it and bolted the plastic one on:

oh look it actaully fits:

Didnt actaully throw the other fan btw just placed it down nicley with anger

So then I painted my thermostat housing to make it look nice:

My sandwich plate will only fit that way? :( Is this because its a metro one? My house mate has one that faces the rear so Im guessing thats a mini one?

Next it was time to build my turbo...

So the Renault 5 T2 that I bought off ebay was fucked, ran compressor threw it and it dropped out a shit load of clumpy oily bits sooooo I went back to the first of the 4 turbo's I have for this project and thought I would change the exhaust housing! So after going through 4 different ideas for turbo's I ended up at square 1 haha, I wanted to know if the fitting size in the manifold was 1/8 bsp and as I was told the fitting on teh end of my turbo would be I screwed it in to check:

So I can fit my new fittings that are comming to this hole and lob the pipe off underneath it leaving a little bit for my MJ or dumpvalve feed? :)

cracked on and removed the housings on the turbos:

Volvo 480 Turbo Turbo:

Renault 5 GT Turbo Turbo:

So I needed to clean the housing up on the R5 T2:

Bit of corrosion that needed blasting:

Cleaned off, cleared out all of the sand, then pushed onto the 480 turbo:

Pretty much ready to go back together tomorrow, especailly since my new studs and nuts came for the turbo today :)

with ref to the sandwich plate, I'm pretty sure it is a metro one I'm using and have it feeding off to the back. Have you tried flipping it upside down from your orientation to see it that would work?

I also notice your using the earlier mini thermostat housing; I'm using the same one but it is puting a bit of a kink in the top hose. just my observations
