If your using a mechanical system within the box, or outside the box. I cant see how it would be any quicker really.

But both would have their benefits.

Internal. Most certainly would be lighter. But if you break it then its an engine out issue.

External. Weight is the issue. But if you break the mechanism you can take it off and repair it without too much issue.

if it breaks in normal use, its design is poor. Design it so that it doesnt break, at least in normal use :)

To some extent. But an oversight in original design. It would most certainly be a pain.
