All in a days work!

I got some new valve guides in the head and reamed out, Prawn bought some much needed new springs.

"this is doing my head in"

As things were when we got back to the garage -

Lapping the valves into the head -

A quick stop for breakfast, after the fastest trip to Tesco's Prawns Audi's ever done! -

Our new "In store" bakery...

All valves lapped in by hand with a couple of different grades, super smooth and fine now :)

Quick stop when my friend came round to show us his new tin turtle...

Block cleaned and prepared for the head -

In the mean time Prawn rebuilt the head -

Tiiiiiight!

Rocker gear fitted -

I like this one...

Das workshop -

Das Audi -

It all went back together with no problems INSTANTLY (video to follow!) but a plug had gone down so we nipped out and treated it to some new BP7ES's

Filthy !

Clean!

Happy me -

and more importantly a very happy Prawn :)

haha, looking good

c an i ask what that plate is attached to the copper 'manifold' tube? a bit of a heat sink/shield or something else?

It looks like it's just there to hold it in place. The pipe at cylinder 4 end is bent in a funny shape so wouldn't sit like that unless held. And the pipe is held with rubber lined P clips so I can't imagine it's anything thermal

Just as Gary said Joe, it's just there to keep the copper tube straight and clear of rubbing on anything.

Without it there, the tube would sit at a nasty angle and touch the rocker cover. It's just a bit of 1mm ally plate slipped over the manifold studs and bolted in to hold it nicely :)

I'm going to drive the Mini tomorrow, so no doubt we'll have some more fixing to do soon. And then when the gearbox goes pop on the Audi we'll have our hands full haha! 8-)

Will catch up on Facebook soon Custard!

Grrrrrrrr............

Car has developed an irritating clunk when releasing the throttle quickly, Instant thought was the tie bar on the bulkhead snapping off, but that looks fine. I went over all the other steadies and gave them all an extra tightening, and tightened up the LCB mount on the diff housnig, and it's almost gone, only happens on very violent jerking of the throttle, but still annoying.

Must get under it at the weekend for a proper inspection!

Well the GT17 turned up this morning....

it's far more filthy than it looked in the pics, but worst of all, it has play in the shaft, both radialy and axialy.

Radialy there's probably almost 1mm of movement, it looks like it might have JUST started to kiss the housing when last used, although it's hard to tell without pulling it apart.

Along the shaft, there's a small amount of play in and out, more than I'd like to see anyway.

Considering it cost me £193, and was claimed to have been recently rebuilt, I'm not very happy, at all.

I've contacted the seller asking him to get this sorted asap.

does indeed seem to be a cock, the plot thickens too!

here's the auction that I won:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Then looking back through his feedback, here's an auction he won 3 weeks earlier:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=260545216701

Bastard.

Just spoken to CR turbo's, they can rebuild one for £225-£295 depending on damage, or supply a recon turbo outright for £415, perhaps that's the way to go.

At that price for an outright one, I would do my best to chuck it back at him. It might not even be suitable for a rebuild. If it is, you still won't be saving anything

If you paid by paypal and he's a twunt make sure you raise a dispute.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

that's what I'm going to end up doing probably.

I've e-mailled the guy, to give him the chance to just give me a full refund now, and clearly said in my e-mail that I've refrained from posting negative feedback until he responds, so hopefully that'll give him the incentive to just refund the money. If I don't hear from him by this time tomorow I'll raise a dispute.

He only lives an hour away from us, personally I'd take the turbo to his door and wait for him to get home then relieve him of some cash, and if he doesn't like it he'll be having a turbo'd boot up the arse 8-)

I'd also point out to him that you are aware it has previously been returned as a piece of shite and hence was mis-represented in the listing.

Prawn doesn't go to NR anymore, now I'm not around and he's got nobody to go with...haha!

I took all the ones on the first page as well, I hate geeky camera types but I've got a good eye for angles. I take all my photos with a crummy digital camera and a steady hand! So thanks :)

So..... a small update:

the 1380 decided to let go yesterday on the way to beaulieu cooper day, about 85mph in the fast lane on the m3 and she just let go!

Unsure what happened as of yet, but it developed a misfire, which strangely cleared itself after 5 minutes, then 2 miles later at about 5000rpm near winchester, i got what sounded like a massive Bursting noise, followed by clouds of smoke from the exhaust and bonnet, and what sounded like a bag of marbles going through the exhaust.

Pulled over to the hard shoulder cutting the ignition and power straight away, and the lump has seized solid. Nothing has exited through the block or box, but the exhaust is full of oil and has metal particles in the tailpipe, teh coolant has all vanished, and teh oil level has gone up an inch.

my initial thoughts are that a valve has stuck open and had the head taken off by the piston, which has subsequently holed the piston, and possibly the head then gone down the exhaust.

Whatever it is, it's seized solid and will not turn over AT ALl, even pushing the car down hil in 4th it just won't move a mil.

bugger!
