316 and 304 have near enough the same heat conductivity properties and safe working temp.

So im not with you?
Could you explain for us please?

I was recommend 304 by a F1/ rally car exhaust manufacturer so it must be fine. They said 321 is ideal but without the right tools a PITA to work with. *oh well*

The impression I got was that 321 was cosiderably more expensive too.

I have the same conundrum.

In the end I used 316. I'm sure that it will be OK at the sort of use we give them.

There are many good turbo manifolds out there using 316. Search the other tuning forums, you will see what I mean.

But then I used 3mm thick.

I reckon that 3mm wall will be allright for Axel. It's not like he's an amateur with a stick welder...
Jimbo's manifold is 321 in super-thin wall btw...

316 http://www.azom.com/details.asp?ArticleID=2868

304 http://www.azom.com/Details.asp?ArticleID=965

321 + 347 http://www.azom.com/Details.asp?ArticleID=967

310 http://www.azom.com/Details.asp?ArticleID=966

304 mandrel bends are widely available in the in the UK, there are a couple of places you can get 321, so 'in my opinion' there isnt really any need to reduce to 316.

Yes 3mm 316 will be up to the job, should also survive well in ALS aplications because of its mechanical strength due to the thickness. Its the cyclic heat loads that worry me especialy with a heavy turbo mounted to it in a car that has suspension which can shock the inertia fuel cut off switch sometimes quie easily. Thats crash impact values.

321 needs 347 consumable filler rods to weld.

I would choose the grades in the following order first 310, 347, 321, 304, 316. Where you can get hold of them. 304 is not a problem.

not trying to be funny about it.

This has all been discussed before

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Depends on how you define "right".

It certainly would not be right for an F1 car or an aeroplane, but on our cars it will be fine.

He can always weld it up if it cracks - not the end of the world.

i just use tube from a toothpaste factory ,theres loads of it down the scrappy , i dont care what it is , its stainless and cheap , the toothpaste can dificult to remove however ,you get a nice minty smell when you weld ,and i dont get plaque building up on the weld ..

Im going to gusset the 4 pipes where they meet the head and maybe in the underside of the 180 bends for extra support.

Its amazing how much difference a gusset can make. lol

Yeah I thought I'd go for BMC green as I want it to be a powerful engine. *wink* *tongue*

TBH I prefer the core plugs being nice and shiney.

I also prefer the plugs unpainted. Matty your loosing at least 10% of your power painting it green!

Sorry, got to disagree with you there. BMC green is the original power paint so will give an increase of 10% in the banana stakes!!
