i have been thinking about putting three holes through the big web between 1 and 2 etc, and 3and 4. laying the crank on its side as in the pics and drill vertically,it would increase the surface area to heat treatment quite a lot, not monsters, maybe 14mm in the middle and 10mm out near the backdrilling,
thoughts,

carl

A bit late now but don't the oil ways for the big ends run through the main webs?

the oil ways run from

"front" main to no1 bigend, centre main to nos 2&3 ends and "fltwheel main to no4 bigend,

or, not the bit Carl as drilled.

OT but ..... how the hell did you get it to 470kg Paul???????????

I am assuming there really isn't much metal in there at all.....

Its a Minisprint. Steel bodyshell, aluminium doors, bootlid, bonnet. Anything I could refabricate in alloy, I have. Anything that could be trimmed up/ lightened, I have. Tubular front suspension, alloy rear suspension, rear disks, alloy fuel tanks, etc etc. Lots of work.

Jimster - 13.42 @ 101mph was my best time with the car weighing 502Kg. It was 470Kg last year at Avon but my back brakes were stuck on and I only managed 13.7. This year theres engine management, new dogbox going on it and some new lightweight ideas to do. If I hadnt cut my finger off just before christmas, it would be about 450Kg in time for Avon this year but I dont think I have time now. Next year..............

Paul, What did you do about the filler necks for the alloy fuel tanks?

Ah ok, i was wonderinf if they were available for the mini type petrol cap, did a search but they all apear to be sealed ones for internal use.

I'm thinking a bit of tube for the neck with a bit of 3mm sheet welded on, to cover the end in, cut a hole and file out 2 bits for the petol cap locators to fit through.

Is that along the likes of what you did?

If I'm not mistaken this crank is in The DON.

I'm sure Carl will confirm either way.

no tom, its not in don , it was cleaned up groud and balanced up just fine, then i stuck it in the airing cupboard ,

i had previously completed two identical cranks which were to be used for a pair of turbo engines to be developed in Don, one is in there now,
the other keeping the counterweightless crank company, lol. amoungst others.

THe heavy metal plugs are a nice idea. I also like the idea of backdrilling and wedging, it makes sense. How's this for a thought. You ponce around with your crank and it costs you X, I wonder how the RPM potential would be improved by using an evacusump. I think this is well overlooked and a winner in my estimation. If you consider the resistance of air at high speed, it's considerable.

You have 2 approaches, looking at the theory to decide what is best and the practical approach of actually seeing what shits itself.

I think Vizard had cranks down pretty well. He was also stoked about the evacusump (not for minis though) IIRC.

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

So you mean that you fettled two other cranks that are similar to the webless, web drilled crank thats in the airing cupboard.

Or

You fettled two other cranks that are identical to each other, one of which is in the DON and the other is also in the airing cupboard, but not the same as the webless, webdrilled crank thats already in the airing cupboard.

Reason I am asking is I will be in the near future looking for a crank and these look the business (platinum price tag no doubt)

If the crank in the DON is up to the job then thats a good enough guarantee for me*wink*

A bit of excavation.

A golf ball goes further with little dimples all over it than without due to air resistance, so think of that theory with a crank, would it be better with a rougher finish?
