Exhaust valve-amajig? Is this normal*, or some twin scroll experimentation?

*Not sure whether 'normal' can ever be used in context with any of your creations!

cool *happy*

that is a rather large turbo, do you know what it is?

im about to fit a reasonably large turbo to the skyline its also twin scroll , i decided to use an off the shelf non twin scroll manifold and intend on trying a T3 spool valve when i find a cheap one

this should slide in nicely when time comes, and back out if i dont like it lol

wel ,this week oi ave mostly bin workin on the astra ,new rear beam polybushes rear disc conversion rust poffed and painted underfloor , well v did the painting ,so as a reward i took her for the first drive of the tvr since '06...

doesn't she look happy ......(or petrified) ...lol....

focussed ..

went well , ran out of petrol...

luckily i had a gallon in case .

it was very very flat on boost , but hit the 7 psi water light easily so looks promising , now for some hot dos mapping action .....

which i finally managed to get working on an old w98 laptop.

Really good to meet you at MITP, just sorry it was so late in the day as I had to depart shortly after picking the various parts up and didn't get to join you in the stands watching Simon's endurance testing *happy*

Cheers

With that engine I bet there's not two fuel stations close enough together to avoid running out!

Bought in 1989? ... 67mm inducer is rather large

7psi at 3500rpm sounds promising, off to nosey at some maps
Whats the displacement of the engine?

Edit cant find maps :(

Robert as you know I don't really do engines, but..

I have read back through the thread but as far as the basic philosophy of your experimentation...

Is it, large turbo (well clearly it is large!) lowish boost and some trickery (spool valve) and no doubt other stuff to deal with lag or some other subtlety I've no doubt missed

Cheers

yes spencer , exactly a you describe .

i originally built it with a small ihi turbo 47mm , and the big holset , in a compounded one turbo into another system.

this was great for response and bottom end and mid range , 9psi gave me around 300 lbs ft ,and 240 bhp at only 4500 rpm , which was the dyno limit at the time .pk power was around 6200 cam wise .

the problem was that at around 5500 the small turbo ,and wastegates ,could not bypass enough gas and the engine was chocking.

it would show around 9 psi till 3500 , then the big turbo would show 8 and the small turbo slow down.

it was really only making enough gas to kick the big turbo into life .

i have run it up to 20 psi , and when it had the two gearboxes it ran 165mph at only 4200 rpm , on that boost.

now i am trying the spool valve idea .

i data logged a run yesterday , and this was the first time with the actuator connected on the valve , it was not very good. i had a max of 5 psi odd , and it was still very lean .also it got v hot ,about 110c and rad pressure was at 10 psi plus .going slowly didn't seem to make a lot of difference ,although it definitely got hotter upon more load ,at even high speed . also i noticed the water pump is now wobbly by a few mmm , so it looks like a new pump ,and a rad clean and flush .

the bits of oil in the header tank are also a cause for concern ,and the sound that its running on 7 lol.

eg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNTmtOCFkoI

fun fun FUN !

i cut the grill right off last night ,and made a deflector to force air into the fins of the rad too.

2 gear boxes? This gets better im gonna have to re read i think
Fitted / attempted to fit my hx35w ( Hc1) today.. its errr too big lol look like the internal wastegate is gonna get welded, ive a tail external anyway but wanted to keep the internal so i could have mental ( external screamer) or quiet modes haha

yup i ran a welded overdrive jag 4 speed , and added a bedford zf turned the other way around behind it .this made 4th direct drive ,and as you shifted the rear box it got higher and higher .

you could stall it at a100mph ,and do 50+ in reverse by putting the front box in reverse and shifting through the back box .very scary doing that speed in reverse lol.

then i went to a c4 auto ,with a clutch instead of a trq converter , so i could do full throttle gear changes i put a transpack valve body kit in it .

knocked about .5 s off the quarter at last .viciously hard gear changes, felt like a truck had crashed into the back of the car .

that holset should be good . if maybe bit small
