So what do you need to go hillclimb racing? Do you needs an ARDS licence? What do you need to have done to your car? How can I find out where my local club is?

well I'm a member of the HSA

http://www.hillclimbandsprint.co.uk/

Which gets you entry to loads of great events and is a grat place to start.

This is who to get a licence off

http://www.msauk.org/site/custom/home/default.asp?chapter=22

And you don't need to pass anything, just fill uin the form and send it off with £30ish, no medical , nothing.

With your licence you'll get a copy of the blue book which contains all the regs - from what type helmet you need to what tyres you can use.

The HSA has a forum, but it's for member only, and it's not very busy either. If you contact Ben Boult or Paul Richardson http://www.hillclimbandsprint.co.uk/contacts.htm they might be able to put you in touch with someone who knows better.

The problem is that Supplementary Regulations contain class structure rather than the MSA Blue Book. And Suplementary Regs are written by individual clubs, so you'll never get one answer.

Also, Sports Libra is not such a popular class, it is essentially a catch all for people outside all other classes as far as I can see. So even if it is seperated by ccs you'd find that on the day that there would most likely be one amalgamated class. This could contain anything from a spaceframe Imp to a hillclimb special..

Standard road legal car is easy.

You don't need the battery in a box, just as long as it's secure.

Other things you need (off the top of my head, but I think it's it)

1) an arrow showing which way to turn the ignition key to off (with 'off' written on it)

2) Thw -ve cable of the battery should be coloured yellow (yellow insulation tape is fine)

3) numbers (preferably on a white background)

4) 2 return springs on the throttle (HIF has this as standard)

5) a mat black 'timing strut' I can't remember the dimentions and height it needs to be, but could get it if you want.

Other general things would be that the seat is fixed down and seatbelt securly fasened. also that the car is in generally ok condition, no play in wheel bearings, steering etc. And also they push the brake pedal.

If I think of anything more I'll add them on.

leeds/wakefield.

Will ,your forgetting the most important thing a person needs if he or she is to enjoy many years of motorsport under the RAC MSA, and that is a very thick skin and the unrivelled ability to accept being told whats right and wrong with your car from a complete wanker more commonly known as scruteneers without question, usually something different everytime you meet the same tosser.

carl.

ps OH!! jim ,they will probably want to do security checks if you tell them your from wales.lol.

Quite right Carl. here is a list of things I have been told.

1) "your handbrake mounting is cracked that needs welding up mate" (put it on the log book) it wasn't cracked it was the seam sealer that was. And in anycase Mod Prod cars have no stipulation to have a handbrake;

2) "that's not propper cage padding, it has to be egg shaped or that new hard stuff" It was the propper, very expensive stuff and it dosen't have to be the new stuff, yet;

3) "Your fire extinguisher is too small for a twin nozzle system". It was supplied as a twin nozzle system and it was the correct capacity. If he'd read the Blue Book he have realised that. Would he prefer I took it out? I don't have to run one at all.

these were the best, there have been others.

Right bumping up this thread.

I'm looking to join this club as the event's are all fairly local for me *smiley*

www.auto66.com

So i need a competition membership (does this then include the relavent licence?)

Then roughly how much does it cost to purely enter an event?

I'm going to join when i get to a printer for the membership form and assume alot of my questions will be answered but thought i'd get some advice from here.

would like to go to my first event with someone who knows what they're doing to be honest!! but sure i'll muddle through.

*smiley*

Most races are 100miles at most, with nothing over 110miles so not to bad for me at all. always important really.

Looking forward to next year, getting all my gear for christmas as a present to myself! ha ha!

Then there is the turbo 1275 issue.

Some clubs, (most except mine it seems), state a turbo 1275 is modified out of its production class.

I have sucessfully argued that the ERA was a series production car here and the rules state any engine offered in any body style of that model.

I was just going to say you would need to make your car 998 to run a turbo as a turbo counts as 40% capacity increase which takes a 1293cc to 1810cc. As a Mini was only ever made as a maximum of 1275cc it runs in the under 1400cc class. You cannot run over 1400cc in the next class and would be bumped over to sports libre with all the single seaters and 6r4s!

Edit so with a K1100 head you would not be able to claim it was an ERA! They did not make enough ERAs anyway to class as a production vehicle.

so what sort of club type racing could you run a 1293 turbo mini then? as it sounds theres no point in doing so in hill climbing as your up against crazy stuff!!

I'm not fussed about running against crazy stuff as you can still compare your times with other "comparable" cars in other classes.

Gav, the licence i think you need is a national B non-race as only 1 car is run at a time. i want to get my national b at some point though incase i ever start circuit racing.

Just wondering if i can get away with my offshore medical for it?

Yep non-race national B is what you need, no medical required.

Duel drives as just as the name suggests, two drivers driving the same car. You will both have to enter the event seperately, but on the form somewhere it will have a place to enter the duel drivers name. On the day its self (and this is different at all events) one of you will run in class order and the other will normally run a class ahead or behind. Inbetween runs you will have to change the numbers on the car. This is easy as if on driver is so number 60 then the duel driveer will be 760 so you just cross and uncross the 7. There is an art to it as it can all happen very quickly at some places.

Wil has just written a 'How to get started in Hillclimbing ' for the HSA. when it is finalised I am sure he will post it.

Ben i assume this means the other driver cannot run in the same class putting him at a disadvantage/advantage depending on class, or am i being fick?

Sorry I made that unclear. Both drivers in the same car will compete in the same class. But the running order on the day will mean that one of the drivers will actually drive the car in a group of cars in a different class. Does that make it any clearer?
