Thinking of a f/g roof

does anyone know what the weight saving is over standard, apparently you have to leave a lip so i can't see it being worthwhile?

opinions?

I'm sure you could find this in a old search.
I personally don't think it would be worthwhile. You'd lose a fair bit of strength in the shell I'd imagine.

You would lose weight, and I'm sure it could be made stiff enough if bonded correctly.

What is the car being used for?

stiffness shouldnt be an issue as it has a multi point cage going in wich picks up front subby and rear beam, (its a race car for the road)

Its more a case of cost per KG savings and iv it would be better spent somewhere else.

Its up high so would be good to get some weight out i guess?

I would estimate 5kg with glue and everything else. Someone did weigh it not to long ago.

5KG saving or KG for the new panel and glue?

A race car for the road, ok. The reason I ask is that if you wanted to use the car for actual motorsport, a GRP roof would not be eligable for lots of things (hillclimbing for a start).

I don't know how much a GRP roof is, but it's probably not a bad £/kg ratio.

I think you will find you loose a fair bit on a carbon roof. I seem to remember somone saying 8kg.?. I'm not sure how fg compares. One thing that may sway you however, the roof is exactly where you want to be loosing weight, high up in the car! 5kg lost up there is going to make much more difference than 5kg lost down low as far as handling goes at least.

just done some maths, assuming its 1mm sheet with a density of 7.85g/cm3

i guess the bit i would remove is about 1.2m long and 1m wide?

So a removal of 9.5kg of steel? (9.420kg)

Both of my fg roofs distorted over time, my Curley carbon roofs been great for 5 years now.
Well worth going with a cf roof and the fit of the Curley roof is great compared to the other fg roofs from elsewhere

Last time i fitted an fg roof skin you lose no stiffness in the shell, as it's all around the roof seam which is still left in place. Still had a half cage though but unless you have one that ties to the shell on the pillars it makes no difference to shell stiffness, it's more of a safety margin if for some reason you end up on the roof, composites aren't going to hold up like steel does scraping across the ground.

Probably go cds as it only £630 Rather than 1300+ I think it's about a 10 kg difference between the 2 the t45 multipoint is about39kg

Has anyone got a weight for a multipoint weld in safety decides cage as its probaby what is going in

Warwickshire.

I've got a Curley Carbon roof same as Rich that we got on the same order (5 years ago). Still looks as good as new & I saved 8.7kg, notably from the highest point on the car.

Also, when the roof was cut off it enabled great access to weld the cage to the top of the A & B pillars before bonding the roof on +rigidity WIN
