I had a ph1 172. Got it for a good price so bit the bullet and took it to a specialist for cambelt, de phaser and w/p. Fred at BTM performance in Birmingham. Top bloke and couldn't fault his work.

I seem to think it was around £600. It's a little bit of a ruff and ready place but he knows clios like the back of his hand. Owns a v6. Genuine, helpful guy too.

I just sold my 172 Cup. Great cars

The 172 cup is cheaper to have the Cambelt changed as there is no a/c. BTM did mine and I think it was around £350.
I don't think the water pumps cause an issue, but there are 3 special tools needed to change the belt apparently.

Another top tip is to keep it entirely standard. I have loads of interest from France when I sold mine, I think they will pick up in value very soon due to European demand, most have been turned into track cars and the cup is the one to have as it is rare.

Funny you say that nic because i just beat a french man to my cup! He actually was coming over to look at it this week.. the guy i got it from said apparently there not available over there or something? So yes your right that does look like thats what will happen! I plan on just making it in mint condition, starting with getting the engine sound but the guy doing it hasnt filled me with confidence, he has managed to get the special tool you speak of and ill go speak to him again before its appointment next thursday. I do love the 172 cup because renault just done everything from standard that most of us would do.. no sound deadening, thinner lightweight glass, no air con, no abs, lighter turini alloys and suspension etc

They had the 172 Ragnotti, which is the same car but super rare.
Apparently they are worth something like €4000 minimum I heard.

i sold my spares collection on eBay offering worldwide postage made me loads of money.

I had a 182 for a good while, great cars if you look past the little foibles. I sold it and bought an R26 Megane, I just put timing belts, accessory belt/pully/tensioner, waterpump plus oil/filter for about £500. Not bad. I couldn't get my 182 sold, I ended up trading it for a grand sum of £2500. I am now selling my R26, again no one seems to want it!

What was the 182 special you could get, it was blue with optional white stripes? Someone had one near me, a mate bought a 182 Trophy for the same price as a cup as the dealer didn't know what it was. I just had a full fat 182:

Then onto this:

£5995 ONO. I would love an R26R or a Clio V6, but need to be sensible!

They were standard fitemt 15's. I think some of the 1.2 or 1.4's had a sport model which they came on 14's. These don't fit over the 172/182 brakes though. They come in 16's too but good luck with finding a set of those 😉

I love my 172 cup. Solid engine mounts. Rear arb and slightly stiffer springs made all the difference. And a smaller steering wheel! And 15" superleggeras. And...

Great cars but you end up adding bits once you start tracking them.

Right i went to the mechanic whos doin the work next week... he was ok with everything but confused to why theres so much hoo ha about the dephasers being done too... i know wherever u look your hear of these sports having or needing belt and dephaser... any reason why they go noisey alot more commonly than most vehicles?? He asked why i want dephaser done cos it will be much more expensive? I said its just what ive heard and read and would like the peace of mind of ALL of it being done in one go

As far as I know the dephaser is prone to crapping out, to change it you'd have to do the belt again which is an awkward job, hence doing both together and be done with it.
