I've been thinking in the last week or so about when i get the mini on th road and thoughts have turned to security. I've already got an alarm and immobiliser however i'm thinking of some sort of tracker just incase someone does help themselves.

Anyone got any recommendations?

You can pick up similar on ebay for less but they're not as easy to plug and play.

On a previous car of mine i had a couple of hidden switches. Pretty easy to do. Switched the fuel pump and a dizzy wire.

The car is akready immobilised etc but i'm more concerned with the car being dragged away. Gps tracker may give me half a chance of getting it back

My mate had a brand new evo 10 about 3 yrs ago, parked up in Birmingham airport staff carpark camera'd up to the balls...

He reckons he had the most sophisticated tracking system there is... A number pad also to be keyed in before u could start it... It was last tracked somewhere on the way to Coventry.. Never to be seen again.

The old bill said they probably had a container on a truck somewhere waiting for it, well planned out!

I think if they want it badly enough they'll have it...

Agreed, however, given the cost of the technology is so low nowadays,i wouldn't mind the chance of a recovery

Don't get me wrong, I've been thinking the same... But there are people out there who will stop at nothing to get something.

Unfortunately these days security is just a nice detterant. Realistically if it gets taken the police won't do shit as they Suck balls!

So I agree rob fit a tracker and if it ever happened at least you could track it as soon as you find out its gone.

I would never waste any time the pigs tho as they would just slow your progress in getting to it.

i have a tracker on the Benross machine ............ its a pair of trainers and large club with some nails on the end ......lol works a treat!

Actually ya I think the old bill did slow him down now u say it.. He was on the phone whilst they rang the tracking company..

He prob would have got to it sooner himself..

If it uses text messages to update position etc...how well does it update ? obviously it isnt fully live, otherwise it would be sending thousands of messages.

or does it need a data plan ?

And can it record location history etc ?

pay out the cash for a clifford with tracker discount off your insurance and 100% tracked from your laptop

think for the cash it would be worth the tracker but as said if someone has there mind set its gone!
plan to only take my mini where i can see it but thats not much fun only takeing it certn places haveing to watch it

daft comment but I don't want to spend the cash on a Clifford system. I've already got a cobra system built into the loom; the tracker is simply going to be a second line of support. I know at the end of the day, if they want it, they will get it.

The thing is, the car is not kept at the house and it could be weeks at a time between checks. The tracker may not just give me a chance of recovery (however small) but also give me an early warning if something does happen.

if you have iphone or pad you can get house alarms that ring you when there going off perfect for garage and the cheap trackers from ebay the £10 ones work well misses hates hers lol

If you keep the car in a locked garage just place a mock IED on the drivers seat
slows the mofos down no end Lol

Just get there before the bomb squad does tho or you could be selling spares on E bay for some time

Picking up on this thread again, after reading the comments, I thought I'd give one a try.

TK102B but sourced from a UK supplier rather than direct from China/HK.

Despite sourcing it in the UK, the instructions were still crap but at least, after a few emails, I got it configured right.

Actually quite impressive, I sent Anna (wifey) out with it in her Bini earlier today (yes, she knew it was there) and these are the realtime results



I say "realtime" but obviously I only screen printed it once she had parked,



As I know the carpark I could put that within 3 spaces.

I've turned the internet tracking off for the return journey (you just alter the settings by a text message to it) as the internet is 15p per MB and each data point (currently set at once per minute) is nearly 0.3MB and the (cheaper) alternative is to text it on demand for the location (15p per request).

However, the version I bought also allows for an internal micro-SD card which will record 60 days plus for free which you download to the PC - obviously not a lot of good if the car gets stolen but potentially great for datalogging speed time, minimum interval is 20secs.

I think it's well worthwhile (the whole kit was only £35) as an added bit of protection.

But it was a real pain to set it up right.

Thanks Rod. Looks like it could be useful bit of kit for the relatively low costs involved. I think it would be daft not to give it a go at that price
