Right been looking around at buying brakes for my Mini, Loads and loads to choose from and different prices! want to try break down what is good and what is bad!

I've personal been looking at Mini sports Alloy calipers,
http://www.minisport.com/mini-sport-7-5-st...y-calipers.html

And Mini spares Alloy Calipers
http://minispares.com/product/Classic/Brak...ack%20to%20shop

IMO the Mini sport ones look the part, come in alot of different colors and are CHEAPER But are they an better?

Thanks

I would generally go for a minispares product; however I do have an early set of the minisport callipers on the turbo and haven't had any issues yet

The mini spares calipers are better as they have a pair of bleed nipples per caliper.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

Seen minispares have two bleed nipples are they better other than that?

I second bretts comment, have a set of 7.9 vented on mini with no issues.
7.9 vented only clear certain 10's though.

To date they clear:
Wellers (bretts)
Revolutions
JBW Mamba's (mine)
Mini 1100 specials (mine)

What the mind can conceive the mini can achieve
MITP 2012 17.01 seconds 1/4 mile against "The Don"
MITP 2013 16.83 seconds 1/4 mile

Do we know what will fit inside 10" rose-petals?

they will not fit under your wheels, but I use rebuilt metty vented four pots. they work very well, as long as the caliper is in good order any brake will be ok

the real difference I have found is the pads. use mintex1144. avoid greenstuff at all costs

Swansea boyo!

I think I have these and they are very screechy, leave a lot of brake dust too :(! The pads that came with my disks from minispares weren't as good as the mintex ones so they do make a difference. I almost give myself whiplash if I've been driving the mini for a few days then get into my work van haha.

they have a very slight squeal, but are by far the best pads I have tried. not stupidly expensive either

The thing I find with the mintex pads is they stop better without locking up the wheels, and will continue to work well under spirited driving. Blackstuff pads tend to not do much then lock up, not giving much modulation, and then greenstuff don't really do anything.

I would like to know if 7.9's fit under rose petals as well, Rather have a bit more surface to brake on. I want to keep 10's

Then am I being a bit stupid in thinking that 7.9 have more surface area?

I have the Minisport 7.5" 4 pots, the only issue I have had is the bleed nipple shearing off in both of the calipers which is supposedly not uncommon, but the larger insert is removable and available from Minisport.

They also fouled on my adjustable tie bars, but there were "tickled" with a grinder to suit.

*Having said the above, I am happy with them!*

The Mini Sport 7.9" 4 pots I had just touched the weights on the inside of my Eleco Falcons. I don't have the brakes anymore but I can measure the internal diameter to see how they'd compare you your Rosepetals is you like?

Going smaller with brake discs keeping with the fashion to use a smaller wheel limits the performance of the brakes considerably. My first advice would be to use the Mintex 1144 or comparable pads and vented discs if you really really want to have 10" wheels. I would otherwise recommend at the very least keeping with the 8.4" disc, better still increase its diameter..

Keeping the required brake torque, master cylinder, pedal ratio, and caliper piston area the same for a fair comparison, the effect of upgrading to the Mintex 1144 pad from a standard pad, and also increasing disc diameter, the difference in hydraulic pressure and required pedal effort can easily be seen.

Running a few numbers..........

Hydraulic Pressure

Brake Torque / Coefficient * Piston Area * Effective Radius

Disc, Coefficient, Pressure
7.5", ( 0.32n) 1005psi, ( 0.45n) 714psi.

7.9", ( 0.32n) 941psi, ( 0.45n) 669psi.

8.4", ( 0.32n) 924psi, ( 0.45n) 657psi.

10.25", ( 0.45n) 480psi.

Pedal Force

Master Cylinder Force / Pedal Ratio

7.5", ( 0.32n) 97 lb ( 44.0 kg), ( 0.45n) 69 lb ( 31.3 kg).

7.9", ( 0.32n) 91 lb ( 41.3 kg), ( 0.45n) 65 lb ( 29.5 kg).

8.4", ( 0.32n) 89 lb ( 40.4 kg), ( 0.45n) 63 lb ( 28.6 kg).

10.25", ( 0.45n) 46 lb ( 20.9 kg).

As can be seen here, using a 10.25" disc with the 1144 pad material halves the pedal effort compared to a 7.9" disc and standard pad material.

Ok so its not just the pedal effort you need to consider, but also how the combination of parts handle the heat they generate. The smaller the disk, the greater the applied force required for the same braking torque results in more heat. You may reach the temperature limits of the setup as a whole, this being the limiting factor.

Also, four pot calipers do nothing to increase the brake efficiency, they simply handle the heat better and decrease the wear rate.

Food for thought

I guess it might also depend who's make of rose petals that you buy?

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.
