The first time I read about the use of electric water pumps is already several years ago when Bill Sollis published his book on Mini race preparation (must be end of the 90's).

Recently I got intrigued to dive into the subject a bit more seriously after reading about some testing performed by KAD on their engine-dyno. Believe it or not they found a massive 20Bhp difference @ 8250rpm when testing the traditional water pump and fan vs. electric pump and fan on the same engine!

Pumping losses are a cube function (pump speed x2 = BHP loss x 8), this means at 6500 rpm where my engine peaks (109 BHp @ wheels , 286 scatter, 45 DCO), in theory there should be a 10HP gain to be found. The KAD dyno sheet indeed shows this to be fact.

*to get an idea on rpm scale --- 5250rpm is where HP and torque cross *wink*

testing: KAD see http://www.kentautodevelopments.com/blog/a...ing-the-results

Based on the above I have now made the decision to bin the mechanical waterpump and fan. Project photo's will follow....

Dont believe everything you read. You will gain nowhere near 10hp, maybe 2-3 tops

I seriously doubt it!

Gathering parts......

SH-engineering water pump plate, 32mm inlet, beautifully made!

Meziere 20 GPM pump, alloy body, rated @ 2000+ hours of use, good for cooling 250HP easily...

As the water pump plate, fitted with 32mm connections as to not restrict flow.

With all the pump flow overcapacity in place in 90% of conditions.....last but not least a Davies Craig controller which operates both the water pump and electric Spal fan fitted behind the Radtec side mount rad. This totally does away with the traditional thermostat as the controller is able to fully orchestrate the water pump behaviour, by feeding between 5V - 13,5V to the pump. This means ultra quick warm up, continued running after shut down etc.

Getting everything to fit.....mock up time:

Water pump plate in place, Radtec fitted on custom mounting, Silicon hoses (32mm into 28mm 90 deg - coupled to standard bottom hose) look very nicely indeed.

Now where do I leave this big ass Meziere pump????

The plot thickens *wink*

Dry deck....

Meziere pump fitted to inner wing as integral part of the dry deck coolant route! Special Tuning decal added as a bit of fun *wink*

To be continued....

Good luck with that one. I have a freid with a stage rally car and the bmw head conversion. He plumbed the electric cooling system exactly as you have with the controllet ad well. He could barely keep the engine cool anything more than idle. He went back to clockwork on the same engine and its done several flat out rallys.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

10 Bhp, bahahaha this guy need a serious reality check!!!

and the dyno plot is either on a different scale or the engine is turning 10k+ rpm which i doubt even as they state 8250rpm

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

why, does the fan save 5bhp?

possibly, at high rpm.

but the only way to know will be to test it.

I did this years ago when I had a front mounted rad, though I never dyno'd the engine it made a noticeable difference to engine response.

I'm running the same pump, never needed the controller though as its fine running at full flow with a stat in line. *wink*

My engine has never ran cooler since fitting it.

you say this will do away with the thermostat i think u still need that restriction to build pressure in the engine as water boils at higher temps if under pressure.. just saying id use a blanking sleeve or cut up thermo

looks like a good set up i think you will see decant results but maby not 10bhp?
its a grate thing to have the water pump and fan run on after engine shut off especially is you have a water cooled turbo! bye bye heat soak!

i did want to have the electric pump as well but space is fast running out with the over sizes rads o well live n learn

Inertia forces dude

Drag caused by fan spinning will have Weight & Air force causing drag.

Water impella causing drag with the water.

removing all that will take away the drag.

There will still be pressure in the system anyway. When water gets hot in a sealed space, pressure will be created.
You may lose some water pressure within the engine itself, but shouldnt be a big deal.

I tried a Davies Craig pump about 15 years ago....it was a piece of shit. It would put me off ever using an electric pump on an engine.

mechanical pumps are cheap/free, they are very reliable, and they work. Doesnt really make a lot of sense to fix something that isnt broken.

A friend of mine went from mechanical to electric water pump on his 1242FIRE and got 2 hp. But the big advantage is to be able to run the pump and fan to keep it cool in the pit lane :)

Removing the fan makes perfect sense. It is not needed most of the time so it is taking up power that could be used elsewhere. The water pump makes no sense, to me. To pump the water around takes energy and that will not change. Just because it is the alternator making the energy does not save any energy. If the elctric pump is more efficient there may be a gain, but minimal.

Looks like a nice install though, regardless of the power benifits.

Years ago I converted a 1293 NA mini to a front mounted rad with electric fan and ditched the mech fan. Like Phil says I did not rollling road it, but it made a noticeable difference to it.
