As some of you may know, I'm currently building a Specialist components 7 Port Turbo engine for my clubman.

Spec is 1330, T2, 9.75-1CR, Helical box, ATB, 2.9FD, AP Verto. Small intercooler, 45mm boost hoses.
The aim is very little lag and perfect road manners. I'm looking for no more than 125 ft/lb and 130bhp. 4-8psi boost.

I can't decide between SW5, Kent 274, or MG metro cam.
What's your thoughts

Betwix Harrogate and York

274 or MG would both work well.

From my experience phase 2 is a great cam, but really does it's stuff at high boost levels. My 5 port feels quite flat below 8psi.

what about the RE13T?

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Just gone from sw5 to ph 2 on my 5 port. Though the engine specs are different i would go ph2 on any fi engine that i build from now on,

They dont. My 1275 turbo, modded head, sw5, standard t3 , poer was between 3-5k, fell flat on its face after that. The new engine is 1380: same head, ph2, rs spec t3, picks up almost instantly and pulls up to 7 k...also this engine has much more power

Australia oi oi oi!

mate get the Re83 cam.. awesome cam with so much torque..

us ausmini lads loved the re13 but the re83 is so much better & he does it for forced induction also.

Low boost road motor 998 cam, go for low down torque turbo to do the rest, it wont be massive power but should be brilliant to drive.

hi matt,

mainly the 2.9:1 dif ,and fairly heavy car .

a cam with a power band from 1500 to 4000 ,to cater for the most used range of the engine ,and give as much low down trq as possible .

if its little too flat above 4000 the some high ratio rockers would work .

this low duration cam philosophy ,would also bring in the turbo as soon as possible ,and using the low rpm band would reduce the negative effects of the t2's small turbine.i would think of trying the 2.7 diff though.

I will be using a Eco input gear to bring Final Drive to effective 2.84.

What's wrong with the SW5 camshaft? Apart from noisey valve train, it pulls WOT from 1500rpm in 4th and max power at 6260rpm on 7 port. It idles and drives perfectly.

where it pulls wot is not really the thing .

if its peaking at 6250 then its coming on cam around 3 to 4k below that ,

so 2250 to 3250 rpm ,probably around 27/2800 rpm ..

thats well out of the good bottom end trq range.. eg 1500 to 2500 rpm...,that i was thinking you wanted to move a heavy car off the line wit a tall gear .

if you imagine your power band as 3000 rpm wide..

,and move that up and down the rev range, you can choose where you lose power and gain it .then plot that against speed in the gears ,and then cam it for the best power where you need it .

eg ,if you have say 21 mph/1000 rpm in top , and you will spend a lot of time at 50 to 60 ,then camming for good trq at 2500 to 3000 will make a nice engine for that usage , but it will pk at 5500 rpm .do you see what i mean ?

another thing to bear in mind.. a cam that works well in a NA engine ,will not allways do so in a turbo emgine ,particularly if the turbine is small ,like a t2.
the back pressure can cause a lot of reverse flow ,and a power curve that drops off before it would in the NA engine can happen .
with a t2 turbine , i would assume the back pressure at higher rpm would be more than a gt17 for example ,and so cam it to avoid the higher rpm and build on the area where the bp is lower and the engine can spend its time being more efficient, and trq higher.

From what was sead in another thread robert is he will probably go for the hotter cam as the build willl most likely end up with a sc box and alot more boost.

I thought the same as you but a 998 cam like some of the 1430 people ran back in the day.

That's the thing it's as 90ft/lb at 3k through to 5k, then falls off. I guess the 7 port head helps it hold power later.

I don't plan to rev past 5.5k with normal driving between 2-5k

Do you think MD246 will gain more bottom end over SW5.

Also where do you see the MD274 power band then.

looking at the this spec , is this the sw5 you mean matt ...

Swift tune SW5 road cam,

Checking height: 0.016" @ lobe

Timing: (Intake): 15/49 (Exhaust): 52/12

Nominal lobe lift: (Intake): 0.281" (Exhaust): 0.281"

Duration (Intake): 244 (Exhaust): 244

Lobe centre angle (Intake): 107 (Exhaust): 110

Lobe separation angle: 108.5

Lift on overlap: 0.036"

that definately doesnt look like the sort of duration one would need for a 6250 pk power ,hmm , i wonder what lift height that duration was measured on ?
i would expect arond 275 degrees dur for a 5 port ofr that rpm ,and 265 for a ally head big port .
