Some fool decided they didn't want to wait at the red lights and that going through me would be better :(

Luckily they were in a landy so their bumper was high enough to miss the shell and just run into the boot lid

I plan to use the car mainly as a hill climber once I have some money next year, so I am looking at replacing the broken boot lid with a carbon fibre one (cost is near similar between steel and carbon if buying new). Anyone recommend a good fitting brand and build?

At least the car took the impact.

You'll be needing a half rear panel.

I should have a spare TDK single skin c/f boot lid soon *wink*

Thats a pain. Luckily by the look of it you got away quite lightly.

My arc angels fibreglass one fitted better then the original boot lid!

Yeah, only a little whiplash.

Took it to a bodyshop that do a lot of minis by me and he thinks it'll beat out ok. I will need the rear resprayed tho.

How well does the TDK fit? With it being single skin, does it use the original lock and mounting points, as well as the wire drop down straps?

I was livid at the time but calmed down now. Yeah hopefully not too bad. The chap was very nice about it and apologetic. He seems like he won't be any trouble with regards getting it fixed.

Is that a double skin fibreglass? 'cause i'm thinking double skin c/f

Don't have it yet, so can't say. It's reserved for somebody else at the moment. I'll let you know if that changes. With it being single sking though, it will probably need pins etc.

This seems to be a more and more common incident with Minis. There are not really that many Minis on the road now, but there are a great number of Minis rear ended every year.

I have been concerned about this, and tried to understand why these incidents happen. I came to the conclusing that because they are one of the only cars on the road without a high level brake light, that it might have some bearing on the matter, since the human brain is lazy. With nearly every car having a high level brake light, its easy for the brain to focus and see that there is a car infront, stopping or stopped, and it is just as easy for the brain to make the mistake when that light is not there or on, and think the car infront is moving untill its too late.

This is one reason I also keep my foot on the brake, hand brake on or not, when sat at a junction/ trafic lights.

I'm not saying its the final answer, but it perhaps goes some way to reduce the chances of this happening.

I'm glad for you that its not such a severe impact, and a little bit of persuasion with a hammer will see it right.

It doesn't help that there are alot of morons on the road who need to put their license back in the cereal packet!

For a road car I'd go for a double skinned boot lid as fitment would be the same as a normal one.

Agreed on the moron front, I got so fed up with avoiding idiots i've now got a defender - Bring it on as far as I'm concerned.

Regarding the double vs single skin, With a little messing about with the boot lock to elongate it to compensate for some flexing my single skin ones looks totally standard from the outside. I Have not tried it in the rain, however the seal seems to fit snugly.

Just don't keep any valuable items in the boot as its quite easy to bend out the way, then again its probably possible to rip a standard one out the way too though.

gutted for you, does look like you got away lucky with no damage to the boot floor.

with regards to the locking mech on single skin bootlids, the arc angels make a bit that attaches to the handle to allow normal setup.
