Last year I got rather hooked on quarter mile stuff, finished the year running 13.5/102 but broke the gearbox and had traction problems, witness the 2.0 sec 60ft time in a rear wheel drive car.So this Winter is about trying some new things, starting with some research on 1960's drag cars, hence the title.
Firstly I want more weight transfer on launch,so I've raised the car 2'' all round and fitted softer front springs.Next I've copied a traction system marketed by Cal-Tech which uses traction bars to transfer axle windup force to down force on the front part of the leaf spring.
Next I've replaced the original axle with a Ford hybrid. This is an English (escort) casing, narrowed, with Atlas (capri) half shafts, also narrowed, and a Tran-X lsd with atlas side gears.I fitted 205/60/13 Toyo 888's and then widened the arches about 2.5'' to cover them.
The next task is to fit a Ford type 9 box (sierra) which I was lucky to pick up with close ratio straight cut gears, and there is a bell housing around to mate it to the A series block, retaining the present uprated clutch.Part of the problem is correct alignment of gearbox to axle,so I'll drop the rear box mount and raise the diff nose. Will still need to cut the rear of the prop tunnel I think.
I'm hoping for a bit more power so swapped the T2 for a GT1752 on one of Matt's new manifolds. Also with the extra ground clearance I want to fit a side exit exhaust in 2.5''pipe with a cherry bomb silencer. The front pipe is a bit convoluted!
Here is a pic of the car as it finished last year.I'll try to update with new stuff later.

I bet my first wank came quicker than your first mini turbo

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

Yes I expect the neighbours to kick off when I fire it up about 7.30 on a Sunday morning........No I haven't tried it yet,and I may well have to fit something else, but ground clearance will be the issue.

My n/a engine with janspeed silencer was louder then my mates turbo with no silencer at all, so it shouln't be a problem.

The exhaust is 2.5''stainless apart from the first tight bend.I plan to put a flanged joint inbetween that and the rest.
