Bought this last weekend... 2.5 liter diesel, 90HP, 1.5 tonnes dry weight *happy* 47MPG, runs on anything that burns (old oil, plant oil, thinner etc). 1.4x2m loading bay with folded seats - I think there's a smal chance this one will stay a bit longer than just one winter... *wink*

Got it for 500€ - but it'll need a bit of TLC, the (fully mechanic Bosch) injection pump needs new seals, it needs a bit of welding done, rear brakes are dead and the front caliper guides need an overhaul. But apart from that it seems OK, for a 22 year old daily runner with over 304.000 km on the clock :)

And much to my surprise, spare parts a rather inexpensive, at least most of them :)

Oh, and can TM tell me what I could do with all this spare space? *happy*

Cheers,
Jan

Hi!

Yesterday we fitted new rear brakes, as the old ones were a bit crispy. Also the handbrake cables were rostten solid - we freed them up and now they work again.

The next improvement saw new seals for the injection pump. The old ones were badly knackered, which means the pump had an air leak and needed bleeding everytime you left the engine off for more than two minutes - unless parked on a hill, nose down...

Mmmh - fully mechanical fuel injection!

Also it's easy to work if you can just sit in the engine bay *happy*

Old crusty parts, replaced with shiny new ones... New glowplugs (45€ f. 5 piece......), new seals, new air filter, 2nd hand lifter for the hatch (1€ *happy*), new rear brakes - totaly transformed the car.

After bleeding the injection pump she now starts on the first turn of the key:

Why does it say "TD" on the back, but no turbo?

T's are the estates, D is obviously for Diesel. The limo is a 250D, the estate a 250TD. The turbos had an extra large 'Turbo' lettering. So a turbo would be a 250TD Turbo. And T stands for 'Touristik & Transport' - travelling & crap-lugging, so to say *happy*

This will upset the typicall perfectinist Merc driver - I don't care; the wing was for free and free of rust... *hehe!*

Also found the reason for the slightly odd handling of the car:

Front left: 6.5x15" ET 49 (195 tyre)
Front right: 6.5x15" ET 37 (195 tyre)
Rear left: 6.5x15" ET 49 (195 tyre)
Rear right: 6x14" ET 31 (185 tyre)

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

It was attached to the new (used) hatch I needed anyway. Would've never paid for it if that's what you mean *happy*

Yes, that is what I meant.

But to be fair, I would have reconsidered the need for a hatch seeing that very spoiler on it *happy*

I see a resto coming on!

The guy who used to have a workshop along from us successfully added a turbo to his merc engined ford pickup. I'm sure you could do something similar?

Resto - no. repairs: yes. Aparently the 5 cylinder turbo diesel from the following genertion C-Class (W202) is a good transplant, as it doesn't have that many electronics yet - but 150 to 180HP are no problem. *Nerd* Suitable donors aren't expensive either, now that the Low Emission Zones are spreading...

Oh, and the spoiler actually does something: all the snow stays on the rear now and doesn't get blown away... Numberplate is fully covered with snow *Rofl!*

And guess what? It's proofen that they don't have any effect at all... Au contraire - polution did grow in many citys. It's not the old diesels like mine who cause that respirable ultrafine dust (the stuff they want to clear with the zones) - it's any car. It comes from brakes & tyres, road dirt, heating, road work etc. - and modern TDIs. But what cars get banned? The old diesels where - if at all - large briquets fall out the tail pipe... *happy*

Though our politic's conclusion is: no effect = restrictions aren't strikt enough *Punch*

I tell you - revolution is coming! And I'm amongst the first on the barricades, throwing my diesel-briquets at 'em! *happy*

Rant over. :)

Cheers,
Jan
