What's the highest oil temp you guys would run?

Since rebuilding my engine, loosing the oil cooler and adding the BMW jets, I've been up to around 115c after 45mins of casual'ish driving. (using mineral as I'm running in).

Water temp is stable at 75deg.

Below is the email I got from Millers

"Hi graham the 20w50 is based on mineral products and will start to break down at

120c so we suggest using between 90c and 110c and if using for competition then

Changing more frequently

Kind regards

allan"

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Thanks Graham

Does anyone else have any views on this? Should I be considering an oil cooler?

I've not been on the motorway yet. This is just from a squirt around town.

Thanks for the feedback chaps.

Yes in theory with fully sin oil you could go up to 130 .

Obviously with the mineral oil that carnt cope with those temps but i gather the 45mins running is steady with you running it in?

Cheers, im surprised its that high just driving round town. With no cooler i run about 80c town and 90-100c motorway depending on outside temp. The most i think is 120c after long toe down.

Are you also running a water cooled turbo or sump guard?

In answer to your question i would certainly be adding a cooler.

My car runs about the same temp as T3TOne's post. 80 town rural driving 90-100 motorway as sustained high revs

No sump guard. No water cooling on the turbo.

What do you use from the block to filter housing? Have you got under crown cooling?

I have fitted an oil stat to keep my temps up for night driving and see around 80 to 110 degrees swing depening on the ambient temp and driving conditions. I f I am sat in town traffic the 13 row cooler struggles to keep the temp down and this could explain where my oil is going as its not burning it but going through a fair bit. I did suspect it e=was boiling it off and now it is partialy confirmed.

I have never heard of engine oil evaporating to the extent that you need to keep topping it up. You would end up with a sump full of sludge.

I have no undercrown cooling, block to filter housing is just mocal rubber oil hose with in line temp sensor.

We had the same issue with our Maestro turbo, the oil we were putting in that was a fully sinthetic but it kept breaking down. Changing the type of oil we used helped but for the life of me I cant remeber what we used. *frown*

this is a relief to me. my tuned mpi has got as high as 100 degrees on a motorway run in the heat. was thinking about a small oil caller. from what i have read i dont need one really. before tuning it the oil temp gauge didnt move, neither has it on the other standard mpis that i have owned

I had an MPI and when I ran it on 15/40 diesel oil temp gauge never moved. Switched to 20/50 and it used to get red hot!

Yes,

perhaps the thinner oil flows through faster, taking more heat with it.

Ok, I'll try some 10w40 Rimula before I go buying an oil cooler.

Just another 100ish miles before I swap the oil and get it on the rollers.

Thanks for the thoughts guys.
