long time no see/spk all i hpe to be back on track with project mini lightweight

right i have probloms & looking for help!

gearbox is sweet

block/short engine all rotates as sweet as a nut!

head, fully recndition & built to a spec, & engine roates fine just slightly stiffer due to compression as you'd expect

when i fit the rockers the motor it wont rotate?

they take effort to tightendown on the head too! more than feels correct

any clues, the rest of the motor has gone together fine

should i fit/need shims under the rocker posts/feet

can anyone help me, or if in or near coventry come & have a look

if the head has been skimmed LOADS then you'll need rocker pedestal spacers yes, I'm running these on my MED full race head. Without them When the rockers were tightened down the valves couldn't shut fully.

Also, are you using the right push rods? I was under the impression that 1275 rods were longer than 998 rods, although I could stand to be corrected on that.......

I'd go with you have the wrong push rods. 1275 ones are 15mm longer iirc

push-rods came from "this" same 998 block :o??

head is a 12g295 with 28cc chambers, itshad a very minimal skim to make sure its flat, chambers were still 28cc after?

bill solis used rocker post shims in his mini dvd did'nt-sorry a lil off topic

Make sure that all your followers are in place. On the 998 they can go up into the gallery above.

Are any of the valve springs fully compressed?

Back off all the tappet adjusters, then try again.

as above, is the timing gear standard, or have you changed it and timed in with a dial gauge/timing disc??

hi mate what cam is fitted ? if its a1275 cam and block and head is skimed to much it could be valves hitting pistons ! try it with tappets set bit loose se what happens . john

spec is as follows, 998 block bored to 1030cc

mg metro cam

belt brive

timed in with a dial gauge, adusted with offset woodruff key, its timed in spot on!

head is a stock 998 cooper 12g295, very mild porting, 28cc chambers, extremely minimal skim

block has been skimmed by the absolute least just to be sure its flat

are you 110% sure they are 998 pushrods and not the longer 1275 ones?

def the original 998 valves in the head?

if someone if the past has tinkered with the head, and lobbed some 1275 valves in there, then this might cause the issue

have the valves got one massive long collet groove, single thin groove or triple grooves?

well thats what i have to check, new chap kal that has stuff for sale suggested the same as yourself joeybaby!!!

i'll wip the head iff & measure the length of the valves & what type collets they've got

whats the solution if i have 1275 valves

morespeed done my head! i asked for unleaded valve seats, head reconditioned & asked simon to do some mild porting/smoothing, i did'nt think i'd be at this point having to check a "known" shops work!!!

i'm in a bit of a mood about it as

1. i've trusted a professional outfit to do basicly an unleaded head

2.ni wish i had a lil more knowledge but then thats why i put my £ & trust in someone else in the know!

3. i cant think of a third reason as the first two are good enough *surprised*D
dont get me wrong i'm not slagging simon off, he's a nice chap! but i think the pressure of buisness & cost cutting causes this greaf

if theres a differance in the length of 1275 valves to 998 ones then its left me in a shitty position has'nt it!
whats my solution if 1275 valves have been put in the head???

the head has been skimmed by a very very minor amount as the chambers are 27.8cc & with my compression calulations it make my compression around the 8.1.1 area so i can run a fair amount of boost

well they should have one long recess if they are original 12g295 valves

if they are non original valves in there, then its possible/likely simon will have chucked in 1275 ones as he will no doubt have loads kicking about

not necessarily a major set back though, but it will mean that rocker pillar spacers will be needed (and maybe some 1275 pushrods too???? vegard will know)

Realy the length of the valve should not make any difference.

If you have set the clearances properly and the springs aren't binding, then the only possible explanation is that the exhaust valve is hitting the block. This can happen with high lift cams and a skimmed 12G295 as the valves do overlap the block deck, although I'm surprised that it can happen in this case.

Take the head off and measure the distance from the face of the exhaust valve to the face of the head. If this is less than the valve lift (0.320") minus the gasket thickness, then that's the problem.

EDIT: Check that you have a full thickness head i.e. minor skim only. The reason I say this is that when Morson did one of our heads a couple of years ago, we did not get back the head that we supplied.
