Hi fellers,
Do you think this will help cooling or disrupt air flow?

opinions please...

IMO that'll allow air to spill out the sides without going through the rad, so a bad thing IMO.

Richard.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.

Even though i imagine the air flow coming in from the front would be quite high? or will it all be chopped up after coming through the grill, and then rely on the fan to shove it in the right direction? but i understand some people don't run a fan on sprint cars, so once up to speed i cant imagine it doing much?

You would save more weight fitting a plastic fan

I am very interrested in the improvements you can made to Mini cooling short of changing the rad.

I red that it's best to close the area between rad and inner wing on clubmans. Is it also applicable to round nose ?

Also I have thougt of some kind of duct at the back of the rad to catch fresh air coming in.
But the area is quite crowded so propably not worthwhile, what do you think ?

In most circumstances, if you have a clubman then the best thing you can do is put the radiator in front of the engine. That's what I did on my old one and it fixed all my running temp problems. I'll be doing that to my current clubby too. I will also be removing the original rad cowling and replacing the cheese greater bit on the inner wing with steel so that I can bolt more stuff up there...

As outlined above - bad idea, the cowling is there to make sure the fan pushes the air through all the rad face - its a good idea to use thin double sided foam when fitting the shroud to ensure a 100% seal all around. Fan placement within the shroud is essential - ie - inside the shroud not outside it! - lastly the air passing under the floor of the car when its moving creates a negative pressure zone which in theory sucks the air out of the rad as well, sealing the rad to inner wing is a good idea as well - from memory the clubmans have some osrt of duct in place already?

- see even back in the early 50's the BL engineers were clever sods, probably from all the time working on fighter planes or tanks.lol!

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

I have a round nose mini so front mounted rad is not very easy if you don't want to cut anything.

I am under the impression that my fan sticks out of the shroud.
What can cause that ?

Can I remedy this with spacers between fan and waterpump pulley ?

I work for Renault and I can ensure you automotive engineers in general are clever sods.
But it is not only engineers who build cars, there are also financial people and they are the ones who can close the money tap that when open is making such wonderful cars.

If you could have got Alec ISSIGONIS's wet dreams Mini, I bet you would drive a terrific car.

Advantage - maybe you don't know my background? I am a degree qualified mech design engineer of 15 + years and have worked for tier one suppliers (where I project managed and designed/developed front/rear suspension component which saved the launch date of the mk1 focus!) and at Lotus as a principal chassis engineer on product and client projects for over 7 years - I'm fully aware of the design to production process and the challenges in between!!

I was just highlighting the fact that they knew their onions back in the 50's without having cad/cfd or other fancy "helping hands"

JK, I was not trying to be disrespectful to anyone and if I did I do apologies.

What I meant is it is not because stuff are done a certain way that it is the best way.
You will agree to me on this one.

It obviously is the best regarding what performance it provides vs how much it costs and how easy it is to fit.

But as we, amateur builder, have more time and accept paying a price, I am looking for an improved setup cooling wise.

So duct at the back provided I can make one and rad to inner wing seal to enhance the negative pressure effect in the wing, correct ?

Ive done a similar thing to my NA 998 but cut that whole section out.
HOWEVER i dont use a mechanical fan either. I use an electric fan on the outside of the rad.
It works great, never over heats and frees up a small amount of power (minute). It also drops warm up times dramitcally.
Id only do this to that engine though. Anything with more power is going to need all the cooling it can get.

Hi lads, I have been thinking alot about my coolant system and have come up with an idea. I will be using a Kenlowe fan sucking air through the inner wing, and will cut the inner wing to the dimensions of the fan so it is a nice tight fit with the rad. Then the cowling system will be sealed to the inner wing. I have come up with a scoop idea to direct the cool air flow from the grill to the rad. What do you think ? Ideas welcome before I cut alluminium into scrap. I haven't test fitted it to the car yet so some dimension tweeking and bracket fabrication may be in order.

I was thinking of doing something similar like this in order to ditch the mechanical fan. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.
