a LIL fishing village on the coast - Newcastle Upon Tyne

well money woes have settled, and i have time for a quick investment opertunity before grabbing another mini.

researched my grandfather during the war and found that he drove a bren gun carrier through North Africa and later Italy. after a long period of soaking myself into history books and regiment battle logs (well i was skint and had nowt else to do)

i got interested in ww2 armour, specifically bren carriers....some may remember the boys toys thread i posted one up on there.

well i got the chance to buy a wreck for £500 quid. did a bit research and found at present only 4 other carriers exist in the UK which seems nuts as they were designed by Vickers Armstrongs Newcastle !!!!!!!

so what is the resale value on one of these bad boys i thought....... bit research later and it seems current price for restored item is 45.000euro minimum !!!!!!!!!!! you do the maths

anyway i bought one and brought it back from Canada and have her home here are the pics, as you can see there is lots to do, but it is all plate steel work 8mm and 10mm all the hard to get bits are there. powered by ford V8 flathead.

here is a complete one

and here is a Mk2 in action, mine is Mk1 (only subtle differences between two and Mk1's are worth a bit more)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpUassQDmUk

and finally who the carrier will be restored in memory of, My Grandad Fusilier K Harrison of 2nd Batalion Royal Scots Fusiliers 5th Div the carrier itself will be a direct copy of his "T10829"

Slightly OT, but is there any way of tracing who was where in the army in WW2, like any records? I know my grandad was in North Africa and then Sicily then further into Europe as the invasion advanced but he won't talk about the war, I respect that but I would like to know more about it.

Somewhere around Swindon

thats quite cool but dont forget the rebuild costs will be significant

i would try and get friendly with some steam buffs its of that era and will certainly be handy when it come to the plate work

getting steel at cost and get free use of industrial guilatines which cut up to 15mm plate, tin work is being farmed out to local college who want to get in on the act (for free) i will be rivetting it myself but have a mate who is a steam buff and has done many boilers *wink*

Jay. you need to go to www.ww2talk.com and register if you can find out his regiment or even his service number (he may even still have his AB64) i can do the rest........... North Africa then sicily then onto Italy sounds like my grandad he later transfered from 5th Div to 46th Div Kings own Yorkshire Light Infantry

AB 64 looks like this

it will contain his service number and regiment.

does your grandad say anything at all ie what he did ? perhaps talk about this thread to him you never know ?!

i found a carrier driver / owner in Lowestoft who's grandfather was in my grandfathers platoon, how freaky is that !

here is grandads lot landing at Salerno 1943 46th Div

here is the regiment photo CPL Jack Hindle is seen half way along the formation facing the camera (stood back from the line) my grandad is stood next to the Sgt in the foreground

and here is a photo given to Shaun (the lad i met) by his grandad Cpl Hindle........my grandad is stood on the left ! Jack is the reme mechanic in the overalls on the right

and to complete the circle here is Shaun teaching me to drive his carrier... two blokes two ends of the country both 3rd generation of RSF vet's both own carriers in memory of their prospective grandfathers...

Richie thanks for the info, I will check it out. The 1940's was a scary time to be alive if you were a coward like me! As far as I know my grandad enlisted at 16, he lied about his age and when they found out they still took him on. He has never spoke much about it to anyone, not even my grandmother, he only has his bayonet and some medals to show for it.

Those old photos are brilliant, hold onto them. Also, you do realise you can get nice blowers and hot up bits for Ford flatheads don't you?

yes i had to reign myself back in as there is oodles of room for a charger in the engine bay, but as it is like driving a mini turbo over marbles as it is, i better leave it as it be power wise. 94 bhp will do.

pulled the track sections to bits and all the pins are shot. anyone any ideas where the best place to buy
nickel chrome steel, dia..437")(7/16")

as this is what they are made from. wonder if stainless has the same properties.

Youd have to be careful with stainless. It work hardens. So if its in compression then tension then compression for a bit itll get harder then break.
