well ,
when driving back from pod ,it was all going swimmingly ,and fine, got to about 5 miles from home ,and put in some more fuel ,and set off ,
got to the eynsham roundabout ,booted it away from the roundabout and the engine started a nasty knock and vibration ,this got louder and louder ,and sounded just like a big end..
checked oil pressure, all ok at 45 psi ,and checked coolant temp, alll ok just off the blue as normal hmmm.
gradually the noise got louder and louder ,and the engine started jumping about a bit ,almost like it wanted to run backwards ,very nasty ,my mind ran from dropped valve to big end to drops to blown head gasket, or all of the above !
so gradually it would not take throttle and died, on a sharp bend of course ,so managed to get it into a turning ,and called the aa .
60 mins later a bloody great flatbed turned up and 20 mins later home .
TIRED!
so this morning ill take it apart ,
any guesses ?

That's really bad luck.

Just one question, why did you spend an hour waiting for the AA? when you could have got a bit of rope & towed it with the Astra?

Look on the bright side time to fit project 25.

Sorry to hear that Robert.

My guess - Your lightened cast iron flywheel is breaking up.

Could be broken crank with flywheel bouncing around? We had similar experience on 2 occasions. First crank broke on the web next to centre main under No3, and second more noisy - broke across the nose. Good luck!!

I would start with getting the wok off and have a pull on the flywheel before pulling the engine out.

How the fook did you do that?

When you said you've "dropped a valve" I thought you meant like bent one or something.

I think its time to get project 25 on the go again. *wink*

the springs are a genuine 185 lbs on the nose ,90 lbs on the seat.rpm is rev ltd to 7100.

Never seen a rocker shaft break like that - you have been s000 unlucky, probably with a faulty shaft.Did it come from Avonbar, like the rockers? If so they would probably like to know and might even let you have another.

Make sure the replacement shaft is correctly modeled before fitting.

Cripes!!!

Its not the first time Ive hear of that failure, IIRC the chap it happened to said it was a Minisport competition shaft.

Looks like the quality of these competition parts is getting a little lax these days now that the genuine parts are becoming harder to get hold of.

Did anyone get to the bottom of the layshaft issues and has that also been rectified.

I'm buying as many 998 engines i can find just for the layshafts and now rocker shafts if they are still in good nik *oh well*
