I have been busy in the garage over the last few months so I thought I would post a thread tracking the build of the new hillclimber. Basically it is going to be very much the same as the TT2, infact it is mainly built out of TT2 spares. The logbook for the shell puts it as a 1978 Clubman in brown, so that is what it shal be when finished.

Anyway here are a few pictures as of yesterday.

1. Getting the brace bars made up.

2. The inside with the pedal box in to get the seat position right.

3. The rear end. When I got the shell it had some awful round lights welded in so I have had to cut them out and rebuild the panel.

I will post more photos as the car develops.

Ben

Interesting choice of shell-stands! I'd be careful building too much weight into the shell in case some of those legs start to buckle!

is that some double skining between the subframe mounts in the second pic?

Tom, You are not the only one to say that about the stands. It wobbles a bit, but they will be fine for this part of the build.

Mini13, On the original TT we cracked the floor there so now we just put a strengthening plate in to help.

Looking good.

Have you decided what engine you are going to use? Obviously turbo, but are you sticking with the 998?

Yes it will be another 998 turbo, to keep in class.

The TT2 is fine (ish), so yes one each.

Avon 08 is the target, but not sure it will make it.

Mainly just me building it as it is at my house, but Wil is helping with the engine build and stuff.

Brill - Always loved the Hamer threads! - Proper builds.

Looks good so far.

I wouldnt worry about those stools - Ikea? We've used ours to jump on to decorate for years - if they take my weight, the TT3 should be no problem! ha ha.

Alex, Exactly my thought. I have been abuaing them for years no problem. Each one will take 100kg easy. It will be back on the pallet trolly before anything heave goes on.

Slater, the lights were a pain, but only a small part of the build.

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

Does the cage have a dash bar? Is that what the steering column will be mounted to?
Nice work by the way.

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

The cage will have a dash bar. It did not come with one though. And yes the steering column will be mounted to it.

I have had the week off to try and move the project along. I seem to have picks a bloody freezing week to live in the garage. I also had some gardening to do, but trying to dig permafrost soon ended that adventure.

Anyway since last posting things have happened, but it doesn't much look like it.

Up on its side to cut out the boot floor, weld in the seatbelt mounts and generally tidy up the floor.

Ex-don subframe cleaned, fixed and painted.

Dashbar fitted and steering column mounted to it.

Seat and seatbelts done.

Getting started on the bodywork, filling the rear lights where plates had to be added and starting to finish the de-seaming.

Lots more to get on with, just need a cash injection to get all the GRP bits, then it might start looking like a car again.

Yes. That part of the floor is piss weak, and with solid mounts it helps a lot. Done it on all our shells.
