Miglia engined road mini - slowly getting there

Thought i'd put up a few pictures of my new project. I've owned this car for 7 years she used to be my daily driver which i did up and then turned into a trackday car. Then i started working for a Mini Miglia race team and realised that while i thought it was fairly nice it was actually a bit rubbish. So finally i've started to rebuild it.

I'm aiming for it to be a fairly standard looking road car, but with a reasonable engine, i want power and comfort so i'm thinking about a small turbo to give me good torque wihout going silly. Probably going to aim for 80-100 lbft torque and 110-120bhp, that should make it nice and driveable without being too peaky.

The last two pictures is one i finished about 5 months ago, it was built for my mum and was a heritage reshell of a 1991 SPI Cooper. I'm very proud of that car, if i do say so myself the build quality is very high and its just great to drive, not particularly fast but its sprightly enough.

Oh dear its been a while, i did a load during the early part of the year, but due to a new job i haven't done any for 6 months, just starting to do some again.

Not in any real hurry.

Anyway a couple of pics as to the current state.

The engine spec has changed as well, i have a miglia engine which i'm de camming and using an sw5 and 1.5 rockers, should make it nice and driveable.

There was a lot of rust which needed loads of work its had new sills, floor repairs, a panels, scuttle, and a completely fabricated airbox and front end.

A FG front end is in the loft and a set of MB's and yokos will put the power down.

Looks like its coming on well, loving the axle stand points really good idea.

How did you make the end of your bulkhead round??

Just cut and shape or use something else?

I cut it all out, used some 3mm to make the curve which i bent round something suitable, think it was a gas bottle, welded that on.

Then used some 1mm to do the side pieces and the front triangulation. Sounds simple but it took me a whole day to do both sides.

Whats the deal with the mods on the rear subby? Any more pics?

The rear subframe has been lightened and seam welded, the rear bar has been removed as its ugly and a piece of tube has been put in its place, below that are anti roll bar mounts, the rest is just decoration really, but it looks nice and doesn't weigh very much.

i am planning some thing similar to the rear subby my self, flat off the boot and raise the subframe bar, the pictures will been a good help thanks,
the bulkhead on yours looks great aswell, curious about the tube across the front subframe, is it just for stiffness or do you have an exotic engine conversion planned?

I'd love to take credit for the design on the axle stand points, but they were copied from the race cars my friend builds, i only know of 3 Minis who have these and none of them are road cars, so i might be the first - woo hoo.

Tiny bit of progress today, managed a couple of hours so i made mounts for my front subframe brace bars and lost a bit more weight from the inside.

Also heres a picture of the wiper motor mount, i've moved it inside to tidy up the bulkhead. I thought about using another type of motor, but they can be such a pain to line up correctly, so i'm using the standard motor, i just turned the tube round and fabricated new mounts and a bracket.

Also another pic of my front axle stand point, they are pretty good but the next one will have a slightly redesigned front mounts.

I've never had my heater checked on an mot, but some form of demisting is always handy. When i had heater failure i just used anti fog stuff and it worked a treat.

With regard the axle stands, do you just weld a steel bar to the stand upright and then plate over the top?

Most stands these have have the cast uprights which I guess will not be suitable. I have found some with a tubular upright, but of course a lot more money.

We are only MOTing the car so that we can compete in Class D. I think that we will only drive it on the road for a bit of testing.

It may be cheaper than a couple of years tax and insurance to get a trailer.

iv got sill stands on my rally car, currently taxed MOTed and insured and i used to use it dily for a while till engine failed :) i like them because there out the way there, dont have to worry about where to place the axle stands normaly, all good

For doing mine i bought the cheapest axle stands Halfords sold, they are pretty crap but they dont need to take a lot of weight and they had the tubular upright, i think they were about a tenner a pair.

I then cut a notch in the top of the stands to give them the most support i could and i just welded a tube, probably next time i'll use bar (but they seem strong enough)

Then to make them look neat I cut some sheet steel welded it one side folded it over and welded it the other side then knocked it down and welded it all the way around, they take quite a time each.

I'm planning on getting the base painted same as the car and the other bit plastic coated black.

Should look nice.

A few more pictures, I picked up seats up yesterday - anybody guess what they are from?

Thats good because it will enable me to make the seat frame to mount the seat runners on. It will take a bit of work to line it all up so the seat fully clears the roll cage. I also need to get the seat belts - not using harnesses been there done that - so i can fix all the anchor points.

The seat are good because they have built in points for the buckle and belt.

Also got my new daily driver - its very slow but nice to drive and quite funky, the voice control stuff is all pretty cool
