Where can I get some 2 1/4", 2 3/4" and 3" high tensile bolts like ARP or Unbrako. I have tried all the usual suspects and some others to no avail. Well i havent phoned about the ARPs yet but id expect them to be expensive.

Any help would be apretiated.

Yes mate, im not happy with the bolts that came with the center main strap or the four bolt cap for that matter.

In fact i asked what the grade of bolt was as it wasnt marked and i just got a blank look.

Is going for a 12.9 bolt a good idea? or am i better sticking with the 8.8s that are supplied, the original mains bolts look better than the ones that come with these center straps/ caps.

I want it to hold together and it would piss me off greatly if it failed because of a bolt not up to the job.

The whole thing is not ideal so i just want to make the best of a bad job.

Iain, thanks, i'll see what i can find with that info. if you could find a link that wound be even better *wink*

BTW, the original bolts are not 8.8. They are 10.9 in the Minispares kit at least.

Sorry to drag up an old thread (especially such a contentious one, but it's the closest I could find on a search...)

I've just received my box of bits from MiniSpares, including the cenre main cap plate and the bolts supplied have SAE/ASTM markings for SAE Grade 5 (ASTM A449) which, is pretty much ISO grade 8.8 equivilant, not 10.9 (they would have to be SAE grade 8 to be equivilant to ISO 10.9).

So what have other people had supplied in the past (ie, have they dropped their standard?)

And, is anything higher than 8.8 really necessary for a road engine?

And finally, does anyone know what the standard factory bolt grade is (the markings on mine don't conform to the SAE/ASTM standards) to know whether the ones I've been supplied are any better, or just longer !!!

3 stripe = sae grade 5
6 stripe = sae grade 8

Yes, three stripe (grade 5) is what I've been supplied with.

Essentially the lowest grade that can be called "High Tensile".

SAE 5 = (approx) ISO 8.8 (a basic high tensile bolt)
SAE 8 = (approx) ISO 10.9

What torque did yours start to stretch at ???

in that last pic, you can see where one of them has 'thinned' where it has stretched, maybe someone should send MS this link?

This was my concern and the original reason for this topic.

Robert, nothing contentios anymore, You just have to laugh. I never did find anywhere to get the cap head bolts, though Smith and Bulough in Bolton may be wrth a phone call. As is the place Iain mentioned.

I have opted to use the standard Factory bolts all round. 998 ones for the extra 'four bolt' ones and the 1275 ones for the main caps. Though the Swiftune studs look a good option.

Does anyone actualy do longer studs for use with a strap? no one advertises they do. Id expect you would need to order them specialy??

Just had exactly this problem with my centre main strap from minispares. Had them in and out a few times to plastigauge and they stretched.

I also noticed they were not long enough at 3.5" as the standard ones are 2.75" + the 1" strap should make them 3.75" to have the equivalent length as OE.

I managed to track down some cap head 3.75" bolts as part of Rob Walker's centre main strap kit.

Nick.

I ordered some ARP bolts for my main caps from APT in the states. Since I am putting a strap on the center main he sold me 2/3s his ARP stud kit and 2 additional ARP bolts for the center main. They should be arriving any day now….

OK,
So it looks like the two bolts I have been supplied aren't really up to it (I can't really check the length accurately until the cap is machined but the grade certainly seems wrong) so I'll try and get some decent ones (imperial size with an ISO rating ...Hmmmm...)
Nice link (Joeybaby83), not come across that company before.
I Might try the States (Mikes1098) if the value of two bolts is low enough, but I've just been screwed by UK customs for importing a small (but expensive) package of engine management bits !!!

I *may* have found a 'cheap' source of ARP bolts - http://www.nolimitmotorsport.com - certainly on hte face of things they are waaay cheaper than any of the major Mini parts suppliers I have found so far.

Anyone else had any dealings with these people before I place an order ?

Metric is for people who can't do fractions.
